You know that “cool looking” resort that the monorail drives directly through? That is the Contemporary Resort, and arguably the most unique resort in all of Walt Disney World. The rooms are stunning, and the views top the rooms! Here are 8 secrets that most people don’t know about Disney’s Contemporary Resort:

8. Poolside cabana rentals.

The Contemporary and The Grand Floridian are the only resorts to offer Cabana rentals. With these rentals you are able to have a private, shaded area with lounges and seating to enjoy your pool time. Some of the areas also have TVs and places to plug in your electronics. They also come with non-alcoholic refreshments, fruit and an attendant. It is an amazing treat and a way to pamper the whole family while you relax.

7. The interesting room construction.

The rooms at this resort were actually fully built and staged and then put into place in their spot within the resort with a crane. Can you imagine the rooms as individual pods, even the bathrooms, and then being hoisted into their place? It is such a “contemporary” (see what I did there?) building concept and is the only resort on property that was built this way.

6. Fishing Excursions

Many guests may not think of fishing when they think of a Walt Disney World vacation, but if fishing is your thing, you can actually book an excursion from the dock at the resort. You can do catch and release fishing in the waters surrounding the resort and enjoy a fun boat excursion with other treats and snacks.

5. Sunday brunch at California Grill.

The California Grill is extremely popular for dinner as the restaurant at the top of the Contemporary with the amazing views for the fireworks at Magic Kingdom. Many don’t realize that there is also a Sunday brunch that is quite delicious, and still offers amazing views during the daylight. The chefs discuss what is being prepared and served in the open show kitchen. You definitely get the best of the brunch with sushi, salads and other culinary delights. If you love brunch cocktails, there will be plenty of those, as well as sweet treats to end the meal. It is delicious, and a meal that you want to make reservations in advance for!

4. One of the original Walt Disney World resorts.

The Contemporary Resort was one of the two original resorts that were built at the opening of Walt Disney World. The Polynesian was the other resort that opened with the Contemporary. These two resorts are the oldest resorts on property, and both still toward the top in the most expensive and luxurious places to stay.

3. Beer tasting at The Wave.

The Wave really is one the best kept secrets of the resort. It is tucked back on the first floor and should be much more popular than it is. There is a brunch-type buffet for breakfast and then a delicious dinner menu. Even guests that frequent the restaurant may not be aware of the weekly beer tasting. On Saturdays between 3PM and 4PM, you can experience a free beer tasting of many of the craft beers that they have on tap. You may want to call ahead and try to hold a spot, even though reservations aren’t officially taken since it can get a little busy at this time!

2. Water recreation rentals.

Are you a fan of water sports and fun? Well go on down to the dock and check out the different boats and water fun that you can experience. Are you up for the ultimate experience? Book a parasailing trip over the lagoon! This is one of the most amazing experiences on property and a great way to get a great view of Walt Disney World Resort.

1. Walk to the Magic Kingdom

Yes, you can walk to the Magic Kingdom. The resort is conveniently located right next to the most popular park on property, which means you can avoid the transportation all together and just walk to and from the resort. No lines and you get right where you want to go. This is a great benefit when the lines for transportation are long and you just want to get back to your room, or you want to get to the park to get ahead of the lines!

About Christy Caby

I am a diehard Disney fanatic! I fell in love with all things Disney from an early age and that only increased once I first visited Walt Disney World! It led me to complete a yearlong Disney College Program working at merchandise locations within Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Disney-MGM Studios at that time) and I worked for Disney Parks & Resorts Technology in Project/Program Management. Now I get to write about Disney and help others plan their magical vacations! Disney holds a special place in the hearts of my entire family as my husband proposed there, we honeymooned there, took trips while pregnant with each of my boys and have visited with them many, many times from 8 weeks old through now. One of my favorite memories from each trip is always the look on my kids’ faces the first time they see the castle. I’d love to help you plan your magical vacation!
