As HBO moves forward with its long-anticipated Harry Potter television series, the cast list continues to expand. John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, with Nick Frost cast as Hagrid and Paapa Essiedu taking on the role of Severus Snape.

The lead trio includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

One role that remains unannounced, however, is that of Lord Voldemort. A report from Redanian Intelligence claims the role has already been cast, but that HBO has chosen not to reveal the actor’s identity until the series airs. However, HBO has yet to confirm this.

In the meantime, another project has confirmed its version of Voldemort. Audible’s upcoming full-cast re-recording of the Harry Potter series has cast Matthew Macfadyen in the role. Macfadyen, known for his performances in Pride & Prejudice (2005) and Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), will voice the character in Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions.

As revealed in a new teaser (below), the audio series will also feature Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore, Riz Ahmed as Snape, and Michelle Gomez as McGonagall. Arabella Stanton will again play Hermione, alongside Frankie Treadaway (Harry Potter) and Max Lester (Ron Weasley) for the first three installments. Starting with Goblet of Fire, the roles will be passed on to Jaxon Knopf, Rhys Mulligan, and Nina Barker-Francis.

Cush Jumbo serves as the narrator, with over 200 speaking roles included in the production.

Per HarryPotter.com, Neil Blair, Chairman of Pottermore Publishing, called the project a “sophisticated, immersive audio experience,” adding, “J.K. Rowling’s storytelling lends itself perfectly to the application of new audiobook technologies,” he continued, “and we’re certain this sophisticated, immersive audio experience will not only add a new listening dimension for existing fans but will introduce a whole new generation of listeners to the wizarding world.”

The first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, is scheduled for release on Audible on November 4. The six subsequent audiobooks will be released every month thereafter.

There’s no release date for the Harry Potter TV series.
