‘The Muppet Christmas Carol 2’: Could It Even Work?

Disney has leaned heavily on sequels in recent years, bringing back familiar properties like Hocus Pocus, The Santa Clause, and Enchanted. But one film that has remained completely untouched is The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992). For over three decades, the festive favorite has stood alone, without a single continuation — and maybe that’s for the best.

Why a Sequel to The Muppet Christmas Carol Might Be a Holiday Misstep

The obvious challenge is narrative. Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol ends with Scrooge transformed, his arc complete. There’s no natural sequel to be found.

For The Muppet Christmas Carol 2 to exist, Disney would either have to invent a new cautionary tale for Scrooge or pivot to an entirely different holiday story.

Would audiences embrace a reformed Scrooge slipping back into old habits, or would that undermine the heartfelt ending of the original?

Then there’s the matter of tone. The 1992 film works because it strikes a delicate balance between Dickens’ gothic moral tale and the Muppets’ irreverent humor. A follow-up risks leaning too far into parody or, worse, feeling like a hollow rehash.

Fans still remember the warmth of Michael Caine’s straight-faced Scrooge, the sincerity of “When Love Is Gone,” and the atmosphere that made it more than just a kids’ comedy. Could lightning strike twice? It’s highly unlikely. But that’s not to say it’s impossible.

The Muppets have tackled other literary works and could, in theory, branch into stories like A Christmas Carol Revisited or even adapt another Dickens classic with a festive spin. But would calling it The Muppet Christmas Carol 2 invite unfair comparisons? Almost certainly.

Ultimately, the original thrives because it is complete. It has already expanded into concerts, books, and collector’s editions without disturbing its perfect ending. A direct sequel risks diminishing what fans hold dear.

For Disney, the real question isn’t “why hasn’t there been a sequel?” but “why should there be one?” And in the case of The Muppet Christmas Carol, the answer may well be: let this Christmas classic remain one of a kind.

The Muppet Christmas Carol is now streaming on Disney+.
