Carowinds called it quits today, sparking outrage from theme park fans.
Carowinds sits along the North Carolina–South Carolina border and has spent nearly 53 years drawing visitors from across the region. The park combines traditional midway attractions with modern roller coasters, positioning itself as a family-friendly destination with a strong lineup of thrill rides.
Among its most popular attractions are Copperhead Strike, Carolina Cyclone, and The Flying Cobras, rides that have helped define the park’s identity in an increasingly competitive regional theme park market.
Ownership of the park shifted in 2024 following the merger of Cedar Fair and Six Flags, creating Six Flags Entertainment Corporation. Since then, the company has pursued aggressive cost-cutting measures amid declining financial performance.
Several parks have already been affected. Six Flags America closed permanently in November, while Six Flags California Great America is scheduled to close in 2027. Meanwhile, Carowinds shuttered three attractions after its 2024 operating season, with its workforce also slashed in the summer of 2025.

Carowinds Season Ends Earlier Than Planned
On Sunday, Carowinds confirmed it would close at 3 p.m. due to inclement weather. The announcement was shared on social media, with the park citing conditions that made continued operation unfeasible.
The early closure effectively brought the park’s 2025 season to an abrupt end.
Carowinds is not scheduled to reopen until March 14, when areas such as Camp Snoopy and County Fair will resume operations.

For guests already inside the park, the announcement came as a surprise. Many had arrived expecting the park to remain open through the evening, as advertised earlier in the day.
Visitors shared photos of lines forming at guest services, where guests appeared to be seeking refunds or clarification. Others questioned whether weather conditions justified closing several hours early.
“Zero weather in the forecast and [you’re] still selling tickets and telling people they have an hour upon entry at 2pm today,” wrote one user.

Another guest commented, “It’s kind of a let down and crappy way to end the season. But it is kind of funny.”
Guest Reaction Grows Online
On Instagram, the response was more pointed. Several guests criticized the timing of the decision and said they felt blindsided by the announcement.
“You guys ended up the year disappointing hundreds of people,” one user wrote. “The weather it’s nice, it’s 53 degrees … it is so sad to see this park not caring about people anymore.”
Another guest focused on communication, writing, “If you’re going to do that, that needs to be planned in advance and very heavily advertised.”

Weather conditions in Charlotte appeared relatively mild. Forecasts called for light drizzle, and temperatures hovered around 50 degrees Fahrenheit at the time the park closed.
Carowinds has not issued further comment beyond its initial statement. The park is expected to resume normal operations when it reopens in mid-March.
For guests hoping to close out the season with a final visit, Sunday’s early shutdown ended the year on an unexpectedly bitter note.
