A New $3 Billion Theme Park Challenger Just Filed Plans to Dethrone Disney and Universal in Orlando

Orlando has long been a battlefield for the “Big Two,” but as we move into 2026, a new titan is officially entering the arena. While Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando Resort have historically dominated Central Florida, new development permits filed confirm that a massive, all-weather theme park destination is officially coming to challenge the status quo.

The player behind this ambitious project is Mattel, the global toy giant responsible for cultural powerhouses like Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Masters of the Universe. According to reports from Fox 35 Orlando, the company has filed plans for a “tourist commercial resort” that will serve as the flagship for a new national brand. This isn’t just another regional attractionโ€”it is a full-scale assault on the “Theme Park Capital of the World.”

The Secret Weapon: A “Weatherproof” Theme Park Experience

One of the most strategic elements of the new Mattel Adventure Park is its solution to Floridaโ€™s two biggest vacation spoilers: the blistering 95-degree heat and the unpredictable tropical thunderstorms.

The recently filed plans outline a massive 90,000-square-foot indoor water park featuring a state-of-the-art retractable roof. This design is a first for major theme parks in the United States, allowing the park to transition from an open-air tropical oasis to a climate-controlled sanctuary in minutes. While Disney and Universal’s outdoor water parksโ€”like Typhoon Lagoon and Volcano Bayโ€”regularly clear their pools during the afternoon lightning storms common in Central Florida, Mattelโ€™s park will stay open, rain or shine.

IP Powerhouses: Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Castle Grayskull

Disney and Universal have built their empires on storytelling, and Mattel is prepared to compete by turning its legendary toy chest into immersive “lands” that span generations.

The Barbie Beach House

Following the massive global success of the Barbie movie, the Orlando location will feature a flagship Barbie Beach House. This multi-story attraction is more than a photo op; it will feature the “Dream Closet Experience,” which uses hologram technology to bring Barbie to life. The structure will also feature a Barbie Flying Theater and a rooftop restaurant serving “pink-themed” cuisine, targeting both young fans and the booming “Kidult” market.

Hot Wheels Twin Mill Racer

For thrill-seekers, the park will feature a Hot Wheels-themed roller coaster that weaves through both indoor and outdoor sections. Designed to mimic the loops and drops of the iconic orange tracks, this high-speed attraction is set to become one of the most Instagrammable coasters in the state.

Masters of the Universe: He-Man vs. Skeletor Laser Tag

Nostalgia is a major pillar of Mattelโ€™s 2026 strategy. The plans include a massive, 4,500-square-foot laser tag arena modeled after the legendary Castle Grayskull, allowing fans to “fight for Eternia” in a state-of-the-art immersive environment.

Strategic Location: In the Heart of the Tourism War

The location for the new park couldn’t be more strategic. Situated on an 11-acre parcel at 15845 State Road 535, the park will be just 10 minutes from the gates of Walt Disney World and directly adjacent to the Lake Buena Vista Factory Stores.

By positioning itself so close to Disneyโ€™s doorstep and just a short drive from Universalโ€™s new Epic Universe, Mattel is making it easy for tourists to add a “Mattel day” to their itinerary. The park is designed as a high-IP “boutique” experienceโ€”one that offers the magic of a major brand without the 10-mile walk associated with the larger resorts.

Conclusion: A Shift in the Orlando Landscape

The filing of these permits marks a turning point for Central Florida. With an indoor water park that defies the weather and a roster of characters recognized by every generation, Mattel is proving that they are no longer just playing with toysโ€”they are playing for keeps in the Orlando theme park wars.
