Disney Dials Back New Character Rules After Early Chaos

Disney has adjusted its approach to character meet-and-greets aboard the Disney Adventure following guest feedback during the ship’s early sailings.

For decades, Disney parks and cruise ships have offered structured character encounters. Guests can queue to meet everyone from Mickey Mouse to Captain America, posing for photos, collecting autographs, and sharing brief interactions with performers trained to stay in character.

That model was recently altered on the Disney Adventure.

During its initial sailings, guests were required to reserve time slots to meet Disney characters. The system quickly proved unpopular, with many guests unable to secure reservations.

Disney then introduced what it branded “Selfies at Sea,” limiting interactions to distanced photos with the likes of Disney Princesses and Mickey and friends rather than traditional one-on-one meet-and-greets.

Disney Tests Updated Character Meet-and-Greet System

Disney has now begun testing a partial return to standard character meet-and-greets aboard the Disney Adventure.

During recent sailings, Snow White was seen greeting guests in Town Square without a reservation system. Guests were able to join a physical queue, similar to traditional park operations.

At the same time, Disney has introduced a controlled queue system and handed out physical passes to guests waiting in line.

The aim appears to be managing demand while allowing in-person interactions.

The passes outline a stricter structure for meet-and-greets:

To ensure the safety and smooth running of the event, organisers may amend Meet and Greet terms and conditions at their discretion. Character appearances are subject to change and may be delayed or cancelled due to operational requirements or unforeseen circumstances.

Ongoing Adjustments Across Disney Adventure

The updated approach reflects an effort to balance guest expectations with operational constraints. At parks such as Shanghai Disneyland, Hong Kong Disneyland, and Tokyo Disney Resort, longer character interactions can lead to extended wait times.

The revised system appears designed to limit interaction length while maintaining a more traditional format.

The Disney Adventure – which previously delayed its maiden voyage from 2025 to 2026has faced several operational challenges since its debut. Guests reported confusion around the ship’s retail booking system, which initially required timed reservations to enter certain stores.

That system led to congestion and long queues in retail areas.

Accommodation concerns have also been raised, with guests citing issues related to cabin setup and mattress comfort on the $1.8 billion ship.

Ironcycle Test Run, described as Disney Cruise Line’s first roller coaster at sea, has also not yet officially opened, though test runs have taken place.

The changes to character meet-and-greets form part of a broader set of adjustments as Disney continues refining operations on the Disney Adventure.

Would you rather book a slot to meet characters or wait in line?
