Hondo’s Selective Memory: Why the Resistance Just Vanished from Smugglers Run

If you’ve spent any time in the “Chess Room” of the Millennium Falcon over the last seven years, you know the script by heart: Hondo Ohnaka needs your help to steal Coaxium for the Resistance to fund the fight against the First Order. It’s been the mission briefing since the land opened in 2019. But if you visited Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge this morning, May 11, 2026, you likely noticed that Hondo’s business model just got a lot more… vague.

In a move that caught “Batuu-vilians” by surprise, Disney has officially debuted an “Era-Neutral” pre-show for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. While the internet is currently buzzing with rumors that Mando and Grogu have already moved in, the truth on the ground is a bit more tactical. Disney is cleaning house, and the first things to go were the references to the Sequel Trilogy.

The Great Scrub: Hondo’s New Dialogue

The update focuses entirely on the dialogue of the Hondo Ohnaka Audio-Animatronic. For years, Hondo’s interaction with the onscreen Chewbacca was a masterclass in timeline-specific storytelling. He would joke about helping the Resistance and fearfully mention that the First Order was on their tail.

As of today, those lines have been “Force-ghosted.”

In the new loop, Hondo no longer mentions specific factions. Instead, he treats the flight like a generic, high-stakes freelance job. He tells Chewie the ship is “perfectly safe” and informs the guests that he has found them the “perfect ship” for a “highly profitable” venture.

Why the change? Because on May 22, 2026, the attraction will begin interlining missions. By scrubbing the pre-show of its “Resistance vs. First Order” flavor, Disney is creating a narrative blank slate. This allows one group of guests to go on a Coaxium heist while the next group assists The Mandalorian, all without Hondo having to change his story in between.

The Mando Mystery: Hype vs. Reality

If you’ve seen viral clips today of The Mandalorian and Grogu delivering a mission briefing, don’t be fooled into thinking it’s the new standard for your standby wait just yet.

The “Scrubbed Hondo” version is what 99% of guests are seeing today. The footage of Din Djarin and “The Child” that was teased on May 4 is being held for the Grand Opening on May 22. However, a few lucky guests in “Technical Rehearsals” (soft openings) have reported seeing the new mission content.

Disney is currently testing the new Unreal Engine 5 software in a handful of cockpits. This upgraded tech provides a staggering jump in visual fidelity and eliminates the “input lag” between the pilot’s yoke and the viewport. If you get a cockpit running the new engine, you’re in for a treat, but for most, the “Mando Mission” is still ten days away.

Conclusion: A Jump to Lightspeed

The “Timeline Reset” is a clear signal that Galaxy’s Edge is evolving into a land that celebrates the entire Star Wars saga.

The theatrical debut of The Mandalorian & Grogu on May 22, 2026, marks a seismic shift for Disney. By launching the Smugglers Run update in lockstep with the film, Imagineers have finally bridged the gap between the silver screen and the cockpit. It’s no longer just a movie release—it’s a total immersion event for every fan. This is the way.
