Marvel has dropped its latest Avengers trailer.

Marvel Studios is steadily moving toward what may become the most important chapter of the Multiverse Saga, with Avengers: Doomsday (2026) now just six months from reaching theaters. While details remain tightly guarded, the project has already undergone one of the most dramatic creative transformations in Marvel Cinematic Universe history.
Originally announced as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the film was intended to place Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror at the center of the MCU’s next crossover event. Those plans changed significantly, however, leading Marvel Studios to pivot toward one of its most iconic villains instead. The result is Avengers: Doomsday, a film that will see Doctor Doom emerge as the franchise’s next major threat.

The biggest surprise came when Marvel revealed that Robert Downey Jr. would return to the MCU—not as Tony Stark, but as Victor Von Doom. The casting announcement immediately sparked widespread discussion among fans, many of whom continue to speculate about how Marvel will explain the resemblance between the former Iron Man actor and the legendary Fantastic Four villain.
Questions surrounding Doom’s origins remain unanswered, but the movie is already being positioned as one of Marvel’s largest productions since Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have returned to oversee the project, bringing back the filmmakers responsible for Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

Reports and announcements over the last year have also pointed toward an enormous ensemble cast. Familiar MCU figures including Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) are expected to play major roles, while members of Marvel’s First Family are finally set to enter the wider crossover landscape. Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) and Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby) will join the growing roster as Marvel continues building toward a collision between multiple corners of its cinematic universe.
The scale of the film has naturally fueled countless fan theories. One particularly popular idea suggests that Steve Rogers’ (Chris Evans) decision to remain in the past with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) may have had consequences far greater than audiences initially realized. Some fans believe that choice could be connected to Multiversal instability and potentially tied to Doctor Doom’s motivations when Avengers: Doomsday arrives this December. It has even been confirmed that the MCU will be going back to the Endgame era.

The Russo Brothers recently confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday is being positioned as Phase Zero.
“That serial shifting and changing and surprising you and then reinventing itself and then shifting and changing and then surprising you — that’s exciting and I think you’re going to see some shifting and changing [with Doomsday],” the duo said at SXSW London (via The Hollywood Reporter). “So, get ready for it. Look, we were with Rob [Downey Jr.] earlier today. We were both talking about this concept that we are back to phase zero. This is starting over from scratch. We want to make sure everybody feels like this isn’t leaning on anything from the past.”
While Marvel’s theatrical future continues to dominate headlines, a separate Avengers storyline is already preparing to reshape the franchise in another medium.

Midway through 2026, Marvel Comics will launch “Avengers: Armageddon,” a five-issue event series from writer Chip Zdarsky alongside artists Frank Alpizar and Delio Diaz. The storyline builds upon developments from several recent Marvel books and places one of the publisher’s most volatile figures at the center of a global crisis.
Instead of Doctor Doom serving as the primary antagonist, the spotlight falls on Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross/Red Hulk.
Following major events involving Latveria, Ross seizes control of the nation and begins expanding his influence far beyond its borders. What starts as a power grab quickly develops into a conflict capable of affecting the entire Marvel Universe.

Complicating matters further is a dangerous piece of technology left behind in Doom’s wake. The device reportedly allows Ross to glimpse possible futures, granting him insight that could make him nearly impossible to outmaneuver. Armed with knowledge of potential outcomes and backed by an army of Hulk-powered soldiers, Red Hulk becomes one of the most formidable threats the Avengers have faced in years.
Preview material released ahead of the comic’s debut also paints a grim picture for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Steve Rogers is shown incapacitated, leaving the superhero community without one of its most respected leaders as tensions continue to escalate. Meanwhile, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Vision, Namor, Winter Soldier, and members of the Fantastic Four are among those drawn into the unfolding conflict. Marvel has additionally teased the arrival of a mysterious new character whose role remains largely unknown. Early promotional material suggests this figure could prove crucial in determining the outcome of the war against Ross, though exactly how they fit into the larger story has yet to be revealed.
The publisher has been careful to emphasize that the consequences of “Armageddon” will not be temporary. Marvel executives and creators have repeatedly hinted that the series will leave lasting marks on the Avengers and the broader comic book landscape. According to Zdarsky, readers should expect a dramatically altered status quo once the dust settles.

That promise of permanent change has become a central theme of the event’s marketing campaign. Marvel has repeatedly framed the story as a dividing line between what came before and what follows, suggesting that both heroes and readers will be entering a very different world once the final issue arrives.
The project has also generated significant interest thanks to its extensive lineup of variant covers. Artists including Dike Ruan, Jerome Opeña, Kaare Andrews, Jenny Frison, Alex Ross, Skottie Young, Marco Checchetto, and even Zdarsky himself have contributed artwork promoting the event.

Whether intentional or not, the timing of “Avengers: Armageddon” has drawn attention because of its proximity to Marvel Studios’ own Avengers plans. Both stories place massive stakes on the shoulders of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, both revolve around power vacuums left behind by Doctor Doom-related developments, and both promise to usher the franchise into an entirely new era.
For now, fans will have to wait to see how those paths ultimately unfold. But with “Avengers: Armageddon” preparing to launch in comic shops and Avengers: Doomsday moving closer to theaters, Marvel’s flagship team appears poised to enter one of the most transformative periods in its history.
The first issue arrives on June 10, 2026.
