Disney World Closes Resort Location to Thousands, Guests Refused Access Effective Immediately

With the hot weather spiking this week, thousands of guests are now locked out of a key Disney World resort location.

Another policy change has quietly arrived at Walt Disney World Resort, and this time it’s targeting one of the most popular amenities at Disney’s resort hotels: the swimming pools.

Guests staying at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort are now encountering tighter access controls at one of the property’s main pool areas, marking the latest effort by Disney to ensure resort-exclusive amenities remain available to the guests who are actually paying to stay there.

The change is currently being tested at Doubloon Lagoon, the feature pool located at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter. According to reports from the resort, cast members are now stationed at the entrance to the pool complex, checking guest reservations and distributing wristbands before allowing entry.

While Disney has long maintained rules prohibiting “pool hopping” between hotels, enforcement has traditionally varied depending on the resort. The new process suggests the company may be taking a more hands-on approach, particularly during the busy summer season when pool areas can become crowded.

For longtime Walt Disney World visitors, Port Orleans has always occupied a unique place within Disney’s resort lineup. Split between the Riverside and French Quarter sections, the Moderate Resort is known for its Louisiana-inspired architecture, scenic Sassagoula River setting, and relaxed atmosphere that feels worlds away from the theme parks. One of the perks of staying at Port Orleans has been the ability for guests booked at either side of the resort to enjoy amenities across both properties.

That policy remains unchanged.

Guests staying at either Port Orleans Riverside or Port Orleans French Quarter can still use pools at both sections of the resort. However, anyone without a reservation at one of the two Port Orleans hotels will no longer be able to access the Doubloon Lagoon pool area under the current test.

“A sign is now posted outside the Doubloon Lagoon Pool stating, ‘Welcome! The Doubloon Lagoon Pool is for the exclusive use of Disney’s Port Orleans Resort Guests only,'” Kenny the Pirate writes.

“A cast member is stationed by the gate, checking for resort reservations and issuing wristbands,” they continue. “Disney’s Port Orleans Guests are welcome to use pools at both Riverside and French Quarter. However, if you do not have a reservation at either of these resorts, you will be unable to enter the Doubloon Lagoon pool.”

The move mirrors measures already in place at some of Walt Disney World’s most sought-after resort pools. At Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and Beach Club Resort, for example, access to the fan-favorite Stormalong Bay complex has long been restricted through wristband verification systems because of the pool’s popularity. Similar controls were also introduced at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort in recent years.

For many Port Orleans guests, the added restrictions may actually come as welcome news. Doubloon Lagoon is one of the standout pool areas among Disney’s Moderate Resorts, featuring a sea serpent waterslide and a larger footprint than many of Disney’s quieter leisure pools. Ensuring that only eligible resort guests can use the facility could help reduce crowding and make it easier for families staying at the resort to enjoy the amenity they paid for.

The timing is hardly surprising. Central Florida’s hottest months are now underway, and resort pools often become just as important to vacation plans as the theme parks themselves. Disney has increasingly focused on enhancing the resort experience, with additional seasonal activities, entertainment offerings, and family-focused programs recently added at several hotels, including Port Orleans Riverside.

Whether the wristband system remains exclusive to Port Orleans or expands to additional resorts remains to be seen. For now, guests planning a stay at Port Orleans should be prepared to show proof of their reservation before taking a dip in Doubloon Lagoon.
