Construction has become part of the landscape at Walt Disney World, with crews working on everything from brand-new attractions to long-overdue refurbishments. Now, another project is underway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, this time involving one of the park’s most recognizable landmarks. While guests can still enjoy the attraction as usual, Disney has stepped in to repair damage and refresh parts of the iconic structure before they become larger issues.

The work isn’t tied to a major ride overhaul or storyline update. Instead, Disney is focusing on preserving one of its most beloved attractions while keeping it open for visitors. As construction continues, guests are starting to notice more visible signs that the project is moving forward.

Why Tower of Terror Continues to Stand the Test of Time

More than 30 years after opening, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror remains one of the biggest draws at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While countless attractions have come and gone over the decades, the haunted Hollywood Tower Hotel continues attracting long lines from first-time visitors and longtime Disney fans alike.

Part of its appeal comes from the complete experience rather than the drop itself. Guests slowly make their way through the abandoned hotel, passing dusty furniture, mysterious lighting, and unsettling details before they ever board an elevator.

The ride also stays fresh because its drop sequence varies from ride to ride. Even guests who have experienced it dozens of times never know exactly what combination of drops they’ll get.

The towering hotel remains one of the defining images of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, making regular maintenance just as important as the ride itself.

Exterior Refurbishment Expands

That commitment to preserving the attraction is becoming more visible as refurbishment work continues outside the building.

Construction began in early May, when crews began working around the exterior queue. A few weeks later, guests noticed decorative flags had been removed near the gift shop exit, while protective scrim covered portions of the hotel’s facade.

Nearly two months later, those coverings remain in place, and guests can now spot scaffolding along the right side of the building above the gift shop near the rear section of the facade. Although the equipment is easy to see, Disney has positioned it so it doesn’t block guest walkways or interfere with traffic through Sunset Boulevard.

Disney Previously Filed Permit for Additional Work

The visible construction isn’t the only sign that Disney is investing in the attraction.

The company has also filed a construction permit connected to the Tower of Terror, bringing in MLC Theming to complete portions of the project. While Disney hasn’t shared exactly what crews are doing, the permit suggests the work could include refreshing exterior paint, restoring themed architectural details, and making other cosmetic improvements.

Although the hotel is designed to look abandoned and weathered, Disney still works to ensure every detail looks intentional rather than simply showing its age.

Damage Outside the Gift Shop Also Needs Repairs

Along with the larger refurbishment, Disney is also addressing a smaller issue that guests have spotted outside the attraction.

Near one of the archways outside the Tower of Terror gift shop, a section of the tile floor has been blocked off with stanchions after visible damage was found. The affected area is relatively small, but Disney has restricted access until repairs can be completed.

While the damaged section doesn’t cause major disruptions for guests, it serves as another reminder that attractions that welcome thousands of visitors each day require regular upkeep. The flooring issue doesn’t affect the attraction or the gift shop. Still, it shows that Disney is taking the opportunity to tackle multiple maintenance projects during the current refurbishment rather than returning later to complete separate repairs.

Disney Keeps the Attraction Open

One of the biggest advantages of this project is that guests don’t have to miss one of Hollywood Studios’ signature attractions.

Unlike larger refurbishments that require extended closures, Disney has kept the Tower of Terror operating throughout the project. Construction has largely remained outside guest pathways, allowing visitors to enjoy the attraction with minimal disruption.

Aside from seeing scaffolding and construction materials around portions of the building, most guests can still experience the attraction just as they normally would. It’s another example of Disney completing important maintenance while minimizing the impact on the overall guest experience.

Looking Ahead

The Tower of Terror has earned its place as one of Disney’s most iconic attractions, and preserving both the ride and its famous facade requires ongoing maintenance. While this refurbishment doesn’t appear to include major changes inside the attraction, it does show Disney’s commitment to keeping the Hollywood Tower Hotel looking its best.

With scaffolding now in place, construction permits filed, and crews repairing both cosmetic wear and damaged flooring, the project is clearly moving ahead. The best news for guests is that they can still experience every eerie hallway, mysterious elevator, and unforgettable drop while Disney works to preserve this Hollywood Studios classic.
