The Next ‘Jurassic World’ Sequel Could Take the Franchise Underwater

The Jurassic Park franchise has explored almost every environment imaginable, from abandoned islands and tropical jungles to mainland areas and secret dinosaur sanctuaries. But one area remains largely unexplored on the big screen: the depths of the ocean.

The next Jurassic World sequel could finally take the franchise underwater.

The idea is not as far-fetched as it may seem.

The Jurassic franchise has repeatedly teased the possibilities of exploring marine life, beginning with Jurassic Park III (2001), which introduced fans to the Spinosaurus, one of the most dangerous predators ever featured in the series.

Jurassic World (2015) then expanded the franchise’s prehistoric roster with the introduction of the Mosasaurus, the massive marine reptile that became one of the film’s most memorable additions. The creature returned in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), which featured an extended sequence inside the Mosasaurus lagoon, before appearing again in Jurassic World Dominion (2022) as it hunted in open waters.

More recently, Jurassic World Rebirth (2025) continued the franchise’s fascination with aquatic creatures, featuring a sequence involving both the Spinosaurus and a Mosasaurus before the characters became stranded on Ile St-Hubert.

Outside the movies, the Jurassic World Evolution video games have also allowed fans to create and manage aquatic prehistoric environments, giving players the opportunity to explore a side of the Jurassic universe that films have only briefly touched upon.

However, no film in the series has ever committed to an underwater setting.

Jurassic World 5, however, could change that by introducing a hidden InGen facility, either beneath the ocean or located in an inland body of water on a remote island, where experiments involving prehistoric creatures continued away from the public eye.

The concept would allow Jurassic World to explore a completely different type of survival story.

Instead of escaping from dinosaurs in forests and abandoned buildings, characters could find themselves trapped in a high-tech underwater facility with nowhere to run.

A Jurassic World movie inspired by films such as Deep Blue Sea (1999) and The Meg (2018) could offer the franchise a new direction while still delivering the suspense, spectacle, and dinosaur chaos fans expect.

While Jurassic World 5 has not been announced by Universal, a new film is reportedly in early development.

However, Rebirth screenwriter David Koepp recently suggested they’re out of ideas.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Koepp said he’s unsure how to continue the Jurassic film series in “a logically and in a scientifically believable way”, saying:

“I think that the challenge of Rebirth was the franchises have become very big, very spread out. Let’s make the dinosaurs special again by restricting them. So we restricted them to this thing, and then the challenge becomes, okay, now how do we logically and in a scientifically believable way expand? That would be the question. If somebody can answer that, I think you’ll have a next movie.”

Koepp famously undid the popular global dinosaurs premise in Rebirth by stating that the planet’s ecology no longer supports the prehistoric creatures, although the film also states that many species continue to thrive near or in equatorial regions.

So there’s plenty of flexibility for an underwater sequel.

Interestingly, Chris Pratt, who plays velociraptor expert Owen Grady in the first three Jurassic World films, has previously said he’d be open to seeing the franchise finally go underwater.

In an interview with Collider during a press tour for The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, Pratt said, “I would say just given the advent of what we can now do underwater, I’m curious to see more about the Mosasaur. I thought that dinosaur was a wonderful creature, but I’d be curious a little bit more about the life of that fabulous creature. Maybe some more underwater dinosaurs.”

Either way, Jurassic World 5 could take the franchise in a completely different direction.

Recently, fans have speculated about everything from human-dinosaur hybrids and Ice Age creatures.

Who knows, maybe the franchise will finally even go into space.

While some ideas sound outlandish, the franchise has never been afraid to experiment, whether introducing hybrid dinosaurs like the Indominus rex in Jurassic World or through human cloning through Maisie Lockwood (Isabella Sermon) in Fallen Kingdom.

Whatever comes next, the future of Jurassic is wide open. And we’re sure life will find a way.
