EPCOT Closes Guest Area Just 17 Days Before 2026 Food & Wine Festival

Changes are already starting to appear around EPCOT as Walt Disney World prepares for one of the park’s biggest events of the year.

With the 2026 EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival approaching, guests visiting the park will notice that one familiar relaxation area is temporarily unavailable. The playground and picnic space located along the rose walk between the Imagination! pavilion and World Showcase has now closed.

Disney has not revealed exactly what is happening behind the closure. However, the timing strongly suggests the area is preparing for another festival transformation.

That would follow the pattern guests saw last year, when the same playground received a new look for Food & Wine. This time, Disney could bring back the previous theme or introduce something completely different.

Either way, the closure is another sign that EPCOT is getting closer to its next major festival.

EPCOT Playground Is Now Closed

Guests can no longer enter the playground and picnic area along the rose walk.

Temporary potted trees have been placed around the entrances, preventing guests from accessing the space. At this point, there are no visible signs of construction or other major work taking place inside the playground.

That makes this closure different from a traditional attraction refurbishment. Nothing currently indicates that Disney is making permanent changes to the area. Instead, the closure appears connected to preparations for the upcoming Food & Wine Festival.

The playground itself is still relatively new. It was constructed in 2025 and has since become another space Disney can adjust throughout EPCOT’s festival calendar. Rather than keeping the area exactly the same throughout the year, Disney can change its decorations and props to match different events.

That flexibility could explain why Disney needed to close the area several weeks before Food & Wine officially begins.

A Food & Wine Transformation Could Be Coming

Last year’s EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival brought a significant change to this particular area.

Disney transformed the playground into Harvest Hollow, giving the space a nature-inspired theme for the festival. While the underlying playground remained, its festival-specific presentation helped it feel more connected to everything happening elsewhere around EPCOT.

Now, Disney has another decision to make.

Harvest Hollow could return for the 2026 festival. Disney could also choose to create a completely new theme for the space. Neither possibility has been confirmed, and no visible work currently provides a clue about which direction Disney is taking.

For guests visiting EPCOT right now, that means the biggest change is simply the closure itself.

There aren’t construction walls surrounding a major new project or signs announcing what will replace the playground’s previous setup. Instead, potted trees are blocking access while the area waits for whatever comes next.

That could change quickly as the festival approaches.

Another EPCOT Playground Could Change Too

The rose walk playground isn’t necessarily the only family area that could receive attention ahead of Food & Wine.

The WALL-E playground located elsewhere at EPCOT may also receive a new theme for the festival. However, no specific transformation has been confirmed for that location either.

That gives Disney multiple opportunities to bring festival touches beyond the food booths and other traditional Food & Wine offerings.

Play areas can also serve a different purpose from many of the festival’s better-known experiences. Food & Wine naturally puts much of its attention on dining, drinks, and entertainment. Playgrounds offer families another place to spend time between attractions and festival stops.

For parents traveling with younger children, spaces like these can become useful breaks during a long EPCOT day.

For now, though, guests should know that at least one of those spaces isn’t available.

Anyone accustomed to stopping at the playground between the Imagination! pavilion and World Showcase will need to make other plans until the area reopens.

EPCOT Food & Wine Festival Begins August 27

The closure comes with relatively little time remaining before the 2026 EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival begins.

This year’s festival officially starts on August 27 and continues through November 21. That gives guests nearly three months to experience the event.

Food & Wine will once again include several activities alongside its dining options.

Global Marketplaces will be part of the festival, giving guests the chance to explore different food offerings around EPCOT. Emile’s Fromage Montage will also return, along with Remy’s Hide & Squeak.

Pluto’s Pumpkin Pursuit is included among the announced offerings as well.

Disney is also adding a new interactive cheese exhibit to the 2026 festival. Festival merchandise will round out the lineup, with Disney already providing an early look at some of the items guests can expect to find.

Together, those experiences will give visitors more to do than simply move from one food booth to another.

The playground transformation could eventually become another piece of that lineup, although Disney has not announced exactly what the space will look like when it reopens.

EPCOT Is Starting Its Festival Changeover

For anyone visiting EPCOT before August 27, the playground closure offers an early glimpse at the transition taking place around the park.

Food & Wine doesn’t simply appear overnight.

Disney has to prepare different areas before the festival begins, and some of those changes can affect the regular guest experience. In this case, that means temporarily losing access to a playground and picnic area.

The closure may be minor compared to losing access to an attraction, but families who planned to use the space could still notice the difference.

The good news is that everything currently points toward this being part of a festival change rather than the permanent disappearance of the playground.

Its history also makes a retheme seem like the most likely explanation. Disney already designed the space to receive different festival decorations, and Harvest Hollow demonstrated how the company could adapt it for Food & Wine.

Whether Disney repeats that concept remains the unanswered question.

Will Harvest Hollow Return?

That’s what guests will have to watch over the next couple of weeks.

Disney could decide that Harvest Hollow worked well enough to return for another year. Bringing it back would give the 2026 Food & Wine Festival a familiar family-friendly area that guests experienced during last year’s event.

A completely new theme would make the change more interesting for returning visitors.

Right now, there isn’t enough visible evidence to determine which option Disney has chosen. With no obvious work underway inside the closed area, the final design remains hidden.

The timing, however, makes the Food & Wine connection difficult to ignore.

The playground is closed, the entrances are blocked, and EPCOT’s next festival begins on August 27. With the park now entering the final stretch before opening day, more festival preparations could begin appearing throughout EPCOT.

For guests heading to Walt Disney World over the next few weeks, this is one small change worth keeping in mind.

The playground along the rose walk is unavailable for now, but its closure may ultimately lead to a refreshed experience when Food & Wine begins.

Whether that means the return of Harvest Hollow or something guests haven’t seen before, EPCOT’s festival transformation is already getting underway.
