The 2026 D23 Ultimate Disney Fan Event brought historic news to Walt Disney World, but none more nostalgic than the updates to Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress. Magic Kingdom’s legendary rotating theater is officially undergoing an extensive reimagining. Recently, Disney Imagineers revealed groundbreaking new details about the upcoming overhaul, proving they are honoring the ride’s legacy while charting a breathtaking new course.

Bob Gurr’s Epic Return
When a sacred piece of theme park history is altered, fans understandably worry about losing its original soul. To ensure the Carousel of Progress retains its historic DNA, Disney brought in the ultimate authority: Disney Legend Bob Gurr.

Gurr is officially consulting on the attraction’s reimagining. As a foundational Imagineer, Gurr engineered the original rotating theater mechanism alongside Roger Broggie for the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair. Having the original mechanical mastermind return to guide a ride he helped invent over six decades ago guarantees the physical theater and its legacy will be treated with unmatched respect.
Designing Like Walt: Dollhouse Miniatures
In a beautiful tribute to the past, the creative team confirmed that every single scene for the updated show was crafted as a physical dollhouse miniature.

When Walt Disney first envisioned the original pavilion for the World’s Fair, he and his team built highly detailed, scaled models to test lighting and staging before constructing full-sized sets. By reviving this hands-on, meticulous crafting method, exactly the way Walt Disney did, Imagineers have infused an extra layer of warmth and authentic charm into every new era.
Following the Children’s Dreams
Historically, the attraction centered heavily on the Father narrating the latest household appliances. However, the reimagined show will feature a profoundly emotional new narrative.
Imagineers revealed that Act I will focus on the family’s children and their aspirations. Instead of treating the kids as background characters, the audience will follow their personal dreams over the subsequent decades, watching as technological progress and family support help those childhood ambitions become a reality.
A Far-Future Finale and Zero Cell Phones
For years, the ride’s biggest hurdle has been its final “contemporary” scene, which quickly felt outdated as real-world technology advanced. Imagineers have solved this with a radical creative shift: the final scene will now represent a future set far in the distance. By leaning into a distant, optimistic tomorrow, the ride reclaims its original Tomorrowland spirit.
Furthermore, Disney revealed a strict design choice that speaks volumes: not a single character in the attraction will use a cell phone or tablet. In an era dominated by screens, Imagineering is taking a deliberate stand to emphasize genuine human connection. The future envisioned here is one in which families interact with each other rather than stare at their devices.
Targeting a late spring 2027 opening and featuring a star-studded voice cast of Bryan Cranston and Jamie Lee Curtis, the new Carousel of Progress proves there is still a great, big, beautiful tomorrow waiting to be discovered!
