Tom Hiddleston Finally Speaks Out on Loki’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Death

Loki’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is looking increasingly uncertain.

Tom Hiddleston is set to reprise the role in Avengers: Doomsday (2026), extending a run that began with Thor in 2011 and has since taken Loki through multiple deaths, resurrections, alternate timelines, and two seasons of his own Disney+ series.

The character was seemingly killed by Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), but Marvel later introduced a variant through the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019).

That version eventually became the focus of Loki, which ended its second season with the God of Mischief taking control of the branching timelines and effectively becoming the figure holding Marvel’s multiverse together.

His confirmed return in Avengers: Doomsday raises a bigger question than simply how Loki will rejoin Earth’s heroes – it also raises the possibility that Marvel may once again kill him off.

Tom Hiddleston Addresses Loki’s Next Death

Hiddleston has now come close to addressing that possibility himself.

During an appearance on Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor was asked about Loki’s history of dying onscreen, particularly in comparison with Patrick Stewart’s Professor Charles Xavier.

Stewart is also returning for Avengers: Doomsday, despite Professor X having already been killed in multiple Marvel projects.

The discussion prompted Hiddleston to begin talking through Loki’s own deaths before abruptly cutting himself off.

“Look, if I keep going down the path of the end of this sentence, I will find myself revealing things that… I’m not, I’m going to stop. I have to stop.”

Hiddleston did not confirm that Loki dies in the upcoming Avengers film.

However, his decision to stop answering before reaching the end of his point has already fueled speculation that the question may have touched on something Marvel does not want revealed before release.

The actor also pointed to Loki’s current place within the wider MCU.

“Well, come on. I’m holding the timelines together. We live in a multiverse now, I think. And Loki is the God of Stories. So, there it is.”

That position could make Loki particularly important to Avengers: Doomsday, which Marvel has increasingly positioned as a major collision between different corners of its multiverse.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Puts the Multiverse at Risk

Disney’s official description for Avengers: Doomsday says heroes from three different universes will be placed on a “deadly collision course” as they face an existential threat.

The film will introduce Robert Downey Jr. as Victor von Doom, marking his return to the MCU after previously playing Tony Stark across the Infinity Saga.

Anthony and Joe Russo are directing, with a huge ensemble that includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Steve Rogers, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, and Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm.

Ian McKellen returns as Erik Lehnsherr, while Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Professor X and James Marsden returns as Scott Summers.

Letitia Wright (Shuri), Simu Liu (Shang Chi), and Hiddleston are also among the returning MCU stars.

Exactly how Loki fits into that group remains unclear.

His Season 2 ending left him physically separated from most of the MCU, seated at the center of the timelines after transforming them into a structure resembling Yggdrasil.

Hiddleston has previously indicated that he once believed the Loki finale could mark the end of his time playing the character.

His inclusion in Avengers: Doomsday proved otherwise.

Whether the movie gives Loki yet another escape from death, however, is one detail Hiddleston appears unwilling to touch.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to open in theaters on December 18, 2026.
