Disney World Restores a Classic 1982 EPCOT Icon — But Big Changes Are Underway Inside

EPCOT’s Mexico Pavilion is undergoing an eye-catching transformation as painters restore the iconic Mesoamerican pyramid to its original 1982 opening-day color scheme. However, while the outside celebrates park history, significant operational changes are taking place inside Plaza de los Amigos.

Bringing Back the 1982 Facade

For over four decades, Central Florida’s intense heat and rain faded the hand-painted details on the Aztec-inspired pyramid into a monochromatic stone gray. Disney’s current refurbishment is bringing back the vivid colors designed by original Imagineers when EPCOT Center opened in 1982:

• Vivid Reddish-Brown Detailing: Deep reddish-brown paint now frames the horizontal relief bands and structural borders, restoring sharp architectural contrast against the stone facade.
• Turquoise Sculptural Highlights: Intricate serpent heads, animal carvings, and geometric motifs along the terraces are highlighted in bright turquoise.
• Updated Walkways: Smooth pinkish concrete around the pyramid’s base is being replaced with new textured natural stone pavement.
• Reopened Entryways: As metal scaffolding comes down block by block, main entrance doors are reopening to guest traffic.

Cultural Closures and Indoor Reshuffling

Step inside the twilight marketplace, and the pavilion tells a very different story as long-standing cultural offerings end or shift locations:

• Oaxacan Wood Carving Closure: After 24 years, the resident wood-carving workshop permanently closed. Master artisan Alba Hernandez Santiago, who hand-painted custom wooden alebrijes figures live for guests, has departed, marking the end of resident artisan craft demonstrations inside World Showcase. Speculation suggests that the cleared space may eventually accommodate overflow from La Cava del Tequila’s queue.
• Mariachi Cobre Moves Indoors: Mariachi Cobre, the world-famous musical ensemble that has performed at EPCOT since opening day in 1982, has moved its primary performance stage inside Plaza de los Amigos. Moving indoors shields performers and guests from Florida’s extreme summer heat while filling the marketplace with acoustic music.
• Kidcot Station Relocated: To make room for the indoor music stage and clear foot traffic bottlenecks, the Kidcot Fun Stop was moved from the central market to a dedicated table directly inside the pyramid’s main entrance doors.

What It Means for EPCOT Guests

The dual project at the Mexico Pavilion perfectly captures EPCOT’s modern balance. On the outside, Disney is honoring its architectural heritage with a stunning 1982 preservation effort. On the inside, operations are being adjusted to accommodate high-capacity food-and-beverage demand, indoor entertainment, and crowd management.
