Iconic Hogwarts Castle Replaced at Universal, Sparking Fan Backlash

Harry Potter fans are pushing back against a dramatic new look for one of Universal Orlando Resort’s most recognizable landmarks.

Hogwarts Castle has stood above The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade since the land opened at Islands of Adventure in 2010. For millions of guests, its deliberately aged stonework became as familiar as the version seen throughout Warner Bros.’ original Harry Potter films.

The structure also houses Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, which takes guests through recognizable Hogwarts locations. Universal has since built similar versions of Hogwarts at Universal Studios Japan, Universal Studios Hollywood, and Universal Studios Beijing. Orlando, however, remains the original Wizarding World location — making even relatively small changes particularly noticeable to longtime fans.

Now, a major refurbishment has effectively replaced the castle’s original exterior look with something very different.

Fans Reject Hogwarts’ New Look

Universal spent months refurbishing Hogwarts Castle earlier this year, covering large sections of the landmark with scaffolding and themed scrim while crews worked on its exterior.

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey continued operating during the project, but guests visiting Hogsmeade temporarily lost the unobstructed Hogwarts view that has defined the land for more than a decade.

The scaffolding finally came down by early June, revealing a newly repainted castle.

Rather than simply refreshing the existing finish, the completed project left Hogwarts looking noticeably different. The facade previously mixed gray, beige, brown, and weathered stone tones, helping individual sections of the building look older and less uniform.

The updated version leans much more heavily into cooler gray tones across the main walls and towers. Rockwork beneath the castle has also been darkened, creating a more consistent finish across the structure.

That difference has gained fresh attention after TikTok user @sarahisinthestars shared a before-and-after comparison of Hogwarts.

Fans quickly made their feelings known.

“What the hell have they done?” wrote one TikTok user.

Another said, “Now it looks like the battle of hogwarts version and not in a good way,” referring to the darker appearance of the castle in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011).

“No it needs to be the first one so it looks like the original broooo,” said one fan.

Another viewer wrote, “It just reminds me of 3d printed plastic now.”

Universal has not physically demolished or rebuilt Hogwarts Castle. The layout, silhouette, and Forbidden Journey attraction remain intact.

However, for fans who associated the original weathered paintwork with the Hogwarts that opened in 2010, the previous version has effectively been replaced by a new visual interpretation.

Hogwarts Enters Another Era at Universal

The backlash arrives during an unusually busy period for Universal’s Harry Potter attractions.

Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle recently returned to Islands of Adventure for the first time since 2022, once again transforming the building with projections featuring Dementors, Death Eaters, Lord Voldemort, and other Dark Arts imagery.

The show runs on select nights through November 1, while Death Eaters have also returned to Diagon Alley at neighboring Universal Studios Florida.

Both offerings form part of Harry Potter’s 25 Years of Magic celebrations, marking 25 years since Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone reached theaters in 2001.

Universal is also continuing to invest heavily in the franchise elsewhere in Orlando.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic opened with Epic Universe in 2025, combining 1920s Paris from the Fantastic Beasts films with the British Ministry of Magic seen throughout the original Harry Potter series.

Permits have since pointed to additional construction behind the land’s existing facades. Documents reference work covering roughly 150,000 square feet, although Universal has not confirmed what the project will eventually become.

The franchise itself is also about to undergo its biggest visual overhaul in years.

HBO’s new Harry Potter television adaptation is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day, introducing new versions of Hogwarts, costumes, props, house imagery, and other familiar Wizarding World elements.

Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.

Whether any elements from HBO’s new interpretation eventually influence Universal’s parks remains unclear.

For now, Hogwarts Castle at Islands of Adventure is still standing exactly where it has since 2010. But after Universal’s refurbishment, the version fans spent 16 years photographing is no longer quite the same.
