Former The Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek has officially broken his four-year silence. In an exclusive preview of his forthcoming memoir reported by The New York Times, Chapek settles corporate scores, defends his most controversial decisions, and aims at the predecessor who helped bring about his downfall.

Chapek’s tell-all, Behind the Castle Walls: My Thirty Years at the Happiest Place on Earth (co-written with Don Yaeger and published by Gallery Books), comes at a dramatic turning point. With Bob Iger having officially stepped down as CEO earlier this year and former Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro now leading the company, Chapek’s account reopens the most bitter civil war in modern corporate history.

Rather than apologizing for the soaring vacation costs that alienated theme park guests, Chapek openly boasts about driving up Disney Parks’ profits while placing the blame for his 2022 ouster entirely on Bob Iger.

Zero Regrets for Disney Park Price Hikes

During his time leading Disney Parks and later as corporate CEO, Chapek became a lightning rod for public outrage over rising vacation costs. Under his watch, Disney eliminated cherished free perks like Disney’s Magical Express airport shuttles and complimentary FastPass reservations, replacing them with paid line-skipping systems like Genie+.

Yet in Behind the Castle Walls, Chapek offers zero apologies. Instead, he proudly defends his commercial strategy, boasting that he introduced yield management and dynamic pricing to Disney Parks. Chapek argues that aggressive price increases were necessary to manage heavy crowds, optimize guest satisfaction, and stop leaving money on the table. “We’d been, at a minimum, leaving revenue opportunities on the table to avoid stirring the hornet’s nest,” Chapek writes.

In a notable twist given today’s leadership, Chapek also takes credit for nurturing current Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro, noting that he promoted D’Amaro to lead the parks division. This trajectory ultimately paved the way for D’Amaro’s path to the top post following Iger’s retirement earlier this year.

“It Pisses Me Off”: Accusing Bob Iger of Sabotage

When Disney’s Board of Directors fired Chapek in November 2022, the official narrative cited a breakdown in trust with creative partners, executives, and Wall Street. Chapek flatly rejects that framing.

In the book, Chapek maintains he did nothing wrong: “My abrupt dismissal hurt my reputation, leaving those close to me, outsiders, and some within the kingdom trying to figure out what I did wrong. The answer, again, is nothing.”

Instead, Chapek lays the fault entirely at Iger’s feet, accusing him of playing “an intentional and preconceived role in abruptly ending [his] ride as Disney C.E.O.” Chapek claims Iger systematically undermined him by disparaging him to Hollywood talent, media executives, and board members. He describes Iger’s tenure as Executive Chairman as suffocating, detailing instances where Iger overstepped—such as directly coordinating theme park COVID-19 closures with California officials without informing Chapek.

A Shadow Over Disney’s New Era

Bob Chapek’s Behind the Castle Walls arrives as Disney enters a fresh era under CEO Josh D’Amaro. Yet Chapek’s tell-all guarantees that the ghost of Disney’s executive feud will linger. By standing firmly behind his park price increases and accusing Iger of ruthless sabotage, Chapek ensures his battle with Iger remains one of the most explosive chapters in Hollywood history.
