Disney Tips Your Guide To A Great Disney Vacation
Before anyone panics, this is a week over Walt Disney World closures.
Seven days, in the back half of January, more than a year from now. The Disney Skyliner is not going anywhere, nothing is wrong with it, and Disney has already published the dates for the year after that too. This is scheduled maintenance on a piece of machinery that carries thousands of people over Walt Disney World property every single day, and the correct reaction to a gondola system taking a week off for inspection is mild relief.
That said, if you are one of the people who books Pop Century Resort specifically because of the Skyliner, this actually matters to you, and it matters more than a transportation footnote would suggest.
Because Disney will absolutely get you where you are going that week. Buses will run. Nobody is stranded.
You just will not get the thing you booked the hotel for.
The Disney World Dates
The Disney Skyliner will be closed from January 24 through January 30, 2027 for its annual maintenance.
Complimentary bus service will be provided between the four Skyliner resorts and the theme parks throughout the closure.
The system serves Disney’s Pop Century Resort, Disney’s Art of Animation Resort, Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort, and Disney’s Riviera Resort, connecting all four to EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Disney has also already announced the 2028 closure dates, which tells you exactly what kind of event this is.
Why It Always Happens in Late January
The timing is not random, and it is worth understanding.
Late January is historically one of the quietest stretches on the Walt Disney World calendar. The holiday crowds are long gone, the early January race crowds have cleared out, and Presidents Day weekend and spring break are still ahead. It is the window Disney uses for a lot of maintenance precisely because fewer people are there to notice.
The fact that Disney announces these dates a year and a half out, and has already locked in 2028, also tells you this is engineered maintenance on a fixed cycle rather than a response to any problem. An aerial gondola system gets taken down and gone over on a schedule. That is how it is supposed to work.
So this is not a closure story in the way the phrase usually reads. It is a calendar entry.
Why It Still Matters to the People It Affects
Here is the part that gets underplayed.
The Skyliner opened in 2019 and quietly changed what those resorts are.
Pop Century and Art of Animation are value resorts. Before the Skyliner, getting to EPCOT or Hollywood Studios from either one meant a bus, same as every other value resort on property. When the gondolas opened, those two hotels suddenly had something close to deluxe level transportation at value pricing, and people noticed immediately. It became the reason to book them over the All-Stars.
Riviera’s entire location pitch rests on it. Caribbean Beach became the hub of the whole system.
So when the Skyliner goes down for a week, those resorts do not lose a convenience. They temporarily revert to what they were before 2019. The buses that replace it are the exact thing the Skyliner was built to improve on.
If you specifically chose one of those hotels for the gondolas, and plenty of people do, that week is not the week to go.
What the Replacement Actually Looks Like at Disney World
Disney will run complimentary buses between all four resorts and the parks.
That covers getting to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios. What it does not replicate is the hotel to hotel movement, which is one of the more underrated things the system enables. Hopping from Pop Century over to Riviera for dinner, or from Caribbean Beach to the EPCOT area for the evening, is easy on the Skyliner and considerably less easy on a bus network that routes through parks.
Riviera guests should also note that reaching Hollywood Studios by Skyliner normally involves a transfer at Caribbean Beach, so the bus arrangement during the closure may actually be more direct for that particular trip.
If You Are Staying Nearby
Guests at the resorts that sit near the EPCOT station rather than on the line, including Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, Disney’s Yacht Club Resort, and Disney’s Beach Club Resort, are in better shape.
Those hotels are within walking distance of the EPCOT station, but they are not dependent on it. Their normal transportation continues unaffected, including buses and the Friendship boats connecting the EPCOT resort area to both EPCOT and Hollywood Studios.
If you walk to the Skyliner from BoardWalk as a convenience, you lose that for the week. Everything else stays the same.
The Rest of the 2027 Refurbishment Calendar
The Skyliner is one item on a fairly busy list. Other confirmed Walt Disney World resort work includes:
- All-Star Movies Refurbishment: May 2026 to January 2027
- Animal Kingdom Lodge, Jambo House Refurbishment: May 2026 to January 2027
- Grand Floridian Resort-Wide Refurbishment, including the porte-cochère: Through early 2027
- Port Orleans Riverside Room Refurbishment: Through August 2027
- Beach Club Exterior Refurbishment: Through late 2027
- Contemporary Resort-Wide Refurbishment: Through late 2027
- Coronado Springs Convention Center Refurbishment: Through September 2027
Several of those run for the better part of the year, which is worth checking against your dates if you are booking any of those hotels. Resort-wide work at the Grand Floridian and the Contemporary in particular can mean scaffolding, closed walkways, and construction noise depending on where your room lands.
How to Plan Around It at Disney World
If your 2027 trip is flexible, move it off January 24 through 30 and the Skyliner question disappears entirely.
If it is not flexible, the four resorts are still perfectly good hotels with working transportation that week. You will just be riding a bus, and you may want to factor that into whether the Riviera’s price tag still makes sense for your particular trip.
And if you have no idea what the Skyliner is and were not planning to use it, this changes nothing about your vacation.
