When Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress closed its doors at Magic Kingdom on July 5, 2026, Disney fans knew the historic Tomorrowland attraction was gearing up for its biggest update in over three decades. Originally created for the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair before finding a permanent home in Florida in 1975, the revolving theater show had not seen a major storyline overhaul since 1993.

Now, as its anticipated late-spring 2027 reopening approaches, Imagineering is sharing exciting updates—including a full-circle voice-casting twist that directly connects the show’s past to its future.

From Daughter to Grandmother: Debi Derryberry Returns

In an announcement from Imagineering, voice actress Debi Derryberry is officially returning to the Carousel of Progress cast—this time taking on the role of Grandmother.

For over thirty years, parkgoers knew Derryberry as the voice of Patricia (Patty), the family’s young daughter in the 1993 version of the attraction. Beyond her theme park work, Derryberry is an industry legend best known as the iconic voice of Jimmy Neutron in Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius.

In studio photos released by Disney, Derryberry was seen bringing fresh warmth to Grandmother in the recording booth. The decision creates a poetic full-circle moment for Disney fans: the performer who voiced the daughter in 1993 will now play the family matriarch when the show reopens in 2027.

Derryberry joins a star-studded voice cast previously announced for the reimagined attraction:

  • Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad) as Father (John).
  • Jamie Lee Curtis (Freaky Friday) as Mother (Sarah).

Sneak Peek at Hollywood Studios: Walt Disney Animatronic Revealed

While Tomorrowland construction continues behind closed doors, guests can catch a first look at the ride’s evolution inside Walt Disney Presents at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The preview gallery features costume pieces, concept art, character sculpts, and detailed scene dioramas.

The exhibit reveals a brand-new show prelude inspired by the 1964 television special Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair. Using state-of-the-art Audio-Animatronics technology, a figure of Walt Disney himself will step onto a soundstage to introduce the attraction before the theater rotates into Act I.

Four New Eras of Innovation

The 2027 update completely overhauls the attraction’s timeline, guiding guests through four new eras of technological progress:

A lively home is transformed for a Halloween celebration, featuring a decorated kitchen, living room, and bathroom where families and pets enjoy festive activities reminiscent of a themed entertainment experience.

  • Act I (1969): The family gathers around a console television to watch the Apollo 11 moon landing.
  • Act II (1985): Set on Halloween night, this scene highlights early personal computing, VCRs, and video game consoles.
  • Act III (1999): Set on New Year’s Eve 1999 as the family prepares for Y2K and the dawn of the consumer internet.
  • Act IV (Distant Future): A forward-thinking look at smart-home automation and sustainable energy.

By blending legacy voice talent like Debi Derryberry with Hollywood stars Bryan Cranston and Jamie Lee Curtis, Imagineering is honoring the attraction’s heritage while inspiring a whole new generation. Guests can look forward to experiencing the next chapter of Tomorrowland when Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress officially reopens in late spring 2027.
