Building your own lightsaber at Disney World has never been a cheap addition to a theme park day.

For Star Wars fans, though, the experience at Savi’s Workshop isn’t supposed to feel like buying another souvenir. Guests step inside Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, select individual components, and walk away with a lightsaber they helped create.

That premium experience comes with a premium price, which makes every update to Savi’s Workshop matter.

Now, Disney has introduced a new version of its Protection & Defense lightsaber theme, along with technological upgrades to the chassis and blades. For guests already considering spending big on a custom lightsaber, the additions could make that expense a little easier to justify.

And for repeat builders, Disney is giving them something substantially different from what they may already own.

A New Protection & Defense Lightsaber Arrives

Protection & Defense has officially entered its third generation at Savi’s Workshop.

Inspired by the High Republic era and the Jedi Order, the theme has traditionally offered a more elegant approach than some of the darker lightsaber options. The new V3 collection pushes that look even further.

Instead of the predominantly silver appearance of the previous version, white and yellow-gold now cover much of the new collection.

That creates a brighter, almost ceremonial appearance and immediately separates the newest Protection & Defense lightsabers from previous builds.

Guests aren’t purchasing a single predetermined design, either.

The collection includes 10 available pieces: two emitters, four sleeves, two switches, and two pommels. Each builder selects one emitter, two sleeves, one switch, and one pommel.

That level of customization is particularly important when considering the cost. Guests aren’t simply paying for a lightsaber sitting on a store shelf. A major part of Savi’s Workshop’s appeal comes from selecting the pieces and creating a personalized final product.

Disney Adds More Detail to the Expensive Souvenir

The newest components give builders plenty to examine before making those choices.

White-and-gold designs dominate the sleeves, which also incorporate imagery connected to the High Republic. The two switches offer different approaches: one with a cleaner design and another with more elaborate gold detailing.

The pommels continue that variety. One combines white with decorative gold elements, while the other relies much more heavily on gold, with sharp white accents.

Even the emitters pull some inspiration from the original Protection & Defense collection while refining those ideas for the newest generation.

Disney has already taken another Savi’s Workshop theme into its third generation. Power & Control received a V3 update earlier in 2026.

But new designs alone may not convince someone to spend heavily on another custom lightsaber.

That’s where the technological upgrades become especially important.

New Technology Adds More Value to the Experience

Disney isn’t limiting the Savi’s Workshop refresh to cosmetic changes.

Upgraded chassis and blade technology introduce several effects intended to make the lightsabers behave more like the weapons Star Wars fans recognize.

The enhanced lightsabers include thermal-cutting, deflection, and spinning effects. Disney has also improved the audio and made blade activation smoother.

Certain rare cracked Kyber crystals have an additional feature.

With compatible crystals, the upgraded system can change the blade between blue and red. A quick wrist movement triggers the change, giving owners another way to interact with their lightsaber after leaving Savi’s Workshop.

Those features matter when guests consider what they’re getting for their money.

A custom lightsaber remains an expensive purchase, but Disney is giving builders more than a new collection of decorative parts. The finished product now includes technological differences that can separate a new build from an older Savi’s lightsaber.

Does the Price Become Easier to Justify?

Whether Savi’s Workshop is worth the money ultimately depends on the fan.

Someone who simply wants a lightsaber may have little reason to pay for the full building experience. Savi’s Workshop, however, centers its appeal around customization and immersion.

That’s why these upgrades arrive at an important time for potential builders.

Guests spending heavily on the experience naturally want the finished product to feel special. New Protection & Defense components offer greater personalization, while upgraded sound, activation, and blade effects give owners additional features after they take the lightsaber home.

The changes could prove even more tempting for repeat visitors.

Someone who built Protection & Defense several years ago will now find a dramatically different selection. Combined with the upgraded technology, another build can result in something that looks and behaves differently from the lightsaber they already own.

For serious Star Wars collectors, that could make another expensive trip to Savi’s Workshop easier to rationalize.

Galaxy’s Edge Offers More Than Lightsabers

Of course, guests aren’t visiting Batuu solely to build lightsabers.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge also offers Oga’s Cantina, Blue Milk, character encounters, and Black Spire Outpost.

Fans can see the Millennium Falcon, X-wing starfighter, A-wing starfighter, and First Order TIE Echelon before experiencing the land’s two major attractions.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance delivers a massive story-driven adventure, while Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run puts guests inside the famous ship’s cockpit. Star Tours – The Adventures Continue offers another Star Wars attraction elsewhere at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Savi’s Workshop remains one of the more expensive ways to take a piece of that experience home.

But with an entirely refreshed Protection & Defense collection and more advanced lightsaber technology, Disney is giving Star Wars fans more for that investment — and perhaps a stronger reason to finally justify the price.
