Walt Disney World is continuing to develop its upcoming Monsters, Inc.-themed expansion at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, with new construction progress bringing the highly anticipated Monstropolis closer to reality. Set to begin welcoming guests in 2027, the new land will transform the former Grand Avenue area into an immersive recreation of the monster-filled city from Pixar’s animated franchise.

The project represents a significant addition to Hollywood Studios, with Disney planning more than a single headline attraction. Instead, Monstropolis will feature several locations inspired by the films, allowing guests to explore the world inhabited by Mike Wazowski, James P. Sullivan, and their fellow monsters.

One of the most notable elements is the upcoming door-vault roller coaster, inspired by the iconic sequence in which Sulley and Mike race through the factory’s enormous warehouse of doors. The attraction is expected to be Disney’s first suspended roller coaster, with its vehicles traveling beneath the track as guests experience a recreation of the memorable setting. Construction has been progressing on the substantial building that will house the ride, with the attraction expected to be a major draw once it eventually opens.

Aerial photographer Bioreconstruct recently shared a new video showing the current progress at the coaster show building and the wider Monstropolis area.

However, the coaster will not necessarily be ready when the first portions of Monstropolis welcome visitors. Disney has outlined a phased opening for the expansion, with other experiences scheduled to debut in 2027 while work continues on the larger attraction.

Among those experiences is the Glob Theater, which will host a show titled Welcome to Monstropolis. Recent concept art has offered a closer look at the venue, including its monster-themed exterior, theatrical lobby, and humorous details inspired by the franchise. These include movie posters with monster-related twists and unusual decorative features designed to make the building feel like part of a functioning city.

Disney has also confirmed that Harryhausen’s, the sushi restaurant featured in the original Monsters, Inc., will be recreated within the new land. Additional environmental details, including laugh canisters inspired by the films, are intended to reinforce the story of a city that now relies on laughter rather than screams for its power.

With Monstropolis still under construction, further updates are likely as Disney works towards its planned debut. The expansion is expected to introduce a new themed environment to Hollywood Studios, combining familiar locations, character references, and a major new attraction. As construction advances, the latest site images offer an opportunity to see how the ambitious project is developing beyond Disney’s concept art.

About Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
