Star Wars: Ahsoka is finally preparing to return to Disney+, and Lucasfilm is using the occasion to answer one of the biggest questions left behind by the show’s first season.

The series will come back in early 2027, more than three years after Season 1 concluded in October 2023. Alongside the show’s return, Lucasfilm and Marvel Comics have announced a five-issue prequel miniseries exploring Ezra Bridger’s (Eman Esfandi) previously unseen escape from Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen).
Titled “Star Wars: Ahsoka — Escape From Thrawn,” the comic will reveal what happened after Ezra secretly boarded Thrawn’s Star Destroyer, filling in a gap the Season 1 finale chose to skip. The first issue is scheduled to arrive on January 20, 2027, the same day Season 2 premieres on Disney+.

Ahsoka Season 1 Left Ezra Bridger’s Journey Home Unexplored
His exile traced back to the end of Star Wars Rebels, when he disappeared alongside Thrawn into a distant galaxy. During Ahsoka Season 1, Ezra managed to board Thrawn’s flagship, the Chimaera, by disguising himself as a Night Trooper.
However, the finale jumped straight from that moment to his arrival home and emotional reunion with Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). While the conclusion resolved Ezra’s absence from the main galaxy, it left fans wondering how he evaded Thrawn, the Imperial forces, and the Nightsisters along the way. The new comic is designed to explore that missing chapter.

Lucasfilm Announces “Star Wars: Ahsoka — Escape From Thrawn”
Lucasfilm and Marvel Comics unveiled the miniseries at New York Comic Con, held October 8 to 11. The five-issue series will serve as a direct prequel to Ahsoka Season 2, following the perilous journey Ezra undertook after stowing away aboard the Chimaera.
Dave Filoni, the creator of Ahsoka, developed the story, with Rodney Barnes handling the script and Andrea Di Vito providing the interior artwork. Phil Noto will contribute cover art. The official synopsis describes a relentless pursuit across hyperspace, with Ezra facing a series of threats that make his eventual return to the main galaxy far from guaranteed.

Ezra Must Outwit Thrawn, Captain Enoch, and the Nightsisters
The comic will follow Ezra as he tries to escape the Chimaera alive while being hunted by some of the most dangerous figures in Thrawn’s ranks.
Captain Enoch, Thrawn’s loyal enforcer, will take part in the pursuit, forcing Ezra to stay one step ahead of the Imperial forces. Meanwhile, the Nightsisters’ dark magic presents another obstacle, tying the comic’s story to the supernatural elements established throughout the first season.
Thrawn himself remains Ezra’s greatest strategic challenge. The Imperial commander is known for anticipating his opponents’ moves and exploiting their weaknesses, and the synopsis frames the story as an intricate game across hyperspace, suggesting the escape was far more complicated than the finale implied.
With Filoni behind the story, the miniseries expands on an existing part of the Ahsoka narrative rather than introducing an unrelated side adventure. However, it does essentially rewrite the ending of the first season, with fans expecting to move forward instead of looking back.

The Comic’s Release Coincides With Ahsoka Season 2
The decision to launch “Escape From Thrawn” on the same day as the Season 2 premiere positions the comic as a companion to the new episodes, allowing fans to explore Ezra’s journey home just as the television story resumes.
Rosario Dawson will return as Ahsoka Tano, alongside Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Lars Mikkelsen as Grand Admiral Thrawn, Esfandi as Ezra Bridger, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla. Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker) is also among the returning cast, with the second season expected to continue developing the characters and conflicts established in the original run. Rory McCann replaces the late Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll.
While the comic fills in the events between Peridea and Ezra’s return, it remains a separate publishing release rather than an additional Disney+ episode.

The Wider Future of the Star Wars Mando-Verse
The comic announcement arrives as Lucasfilm continues developing the interconnected stories established across The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew.
Thrawn’s return carries particular weight, as the character has been positioned as a major threat to the New Republic, potentially linking the events of Ahsoka to the wider Mando-Verse. Lucasfilm previously announced plans for a crossover film directed by Dave Filoni, although the company’s broader release plans have continued to shift.
The theatrical release of The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) and the ongoing development of Star Wars: Starfighter (2027) show the franchise’s continued investment in films alongside its Disney+ slate. Even so, the future of Ahsoka beyond Season 2 remains uncertain, with no third season confirmed.

For fans counting down to Ahsoka’s return, “Escape From Thrawn” offers a missing chapter that sits directly between the two seasons. Its five-issue format gives Lucasfilm room to explore Ezra’s pursuit by Thrawn, Captain Enoch, and the Nightsisters in far greater detail than the finale allowed.
If you want the full picture before or alongside the new episodes, issue one lands on January 20, 2027, the same day Season 2 arrives on Disney+. With Filoni shaping the story, the comic is likely to carry real weight for where Ezra and Thrawn are headed next, even as the long-term future of the Mando-Verse remains unclear.
