A former SeaWorld theme park site is finally preparing to welcome visitors again after spending decades largely abandoned.

SeaWorld has operated several theme parks across the United States since opening its first location in San Diego, California, in 1964. As of October 17, the company runs three SeaWorld-branded parks in Orlando, San Diego, and San Antonio, alongside Busch Gardens and several water parks.

However, not every SeaWorld park has survived. While the company has continued expanding its attractions and adding new roller coasters, one of its former locations has spent years sitting empty, with little remaining of the marine life destination that once attracted thousands of visitors.

Now, more than two decades after closing, the property is finally getting a new lease on life.

Former SeaWorld Park Prepares to Reopen

SeaWorld Ohio originally opened in Aurora, Ohio, in 1970, becoming the company’s second park and its first outside California.

Located beside Geauga Lake, the park offered animal encounters, dolphin performances, and killer whale shows featuring Shamu. It became a popular destination for families across the Midwest, particularly during the summer months.

However, SeaWorld Ohio’s relatively short operating season presented challenges. Unlike its counterparts in Florida and California, the park faced harsh winters that limited its ability to operate year-round.

In 2001, SeaWorld sold the Ohio location to Six Flags, which combined the property with the neighboring Geauga Lake amusement park to create Six Flags Worlds of Adventure.

The combined park was subsequently acquired by Cedar Fair in 2004. The former SeaWorld section closed permanently, while the wider property underwent further changes, including the eventual closure of Geauga Lake’s amusement rides in 2007.

Wildwater Kingdom, the water park that continued operating on part of the property, eventually closed in 2016. Much of the former entertainment destination subsequently remained unused for nearly a decade.

However, in December 2024, the City of Aurora completed a $5.3 million purchase of Geauga Lake and 48 surrounding acres, including land previously occupied by SeaWorld Ohio.

Officials announced plans to transform the property into a public park, allowing residents to access the lakefront for the first time in years.

Now, nearly two years after the purchase, the city has confirmed that Aurora Park at Geauga Lake will officially open on October 25, 2026.

The grand opening will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at 1100 Squires Road, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 1:30 p.m (via FOX 8).

“What a great day this will be for Aurora and Northeast Ohio,” Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin said in the city’s October 12 announcement.

“Following years of decline and abandonment, this beautiful property will again be open for public enjoyment, thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this happen!”

What’s Replacing SeaWorld Ohio?

While the property is reopening, visitors shouldn’t expect a return to the SeaWorld attractions that once occupied the site.

Instead, the first phase of Aurora Park at Geauga Lake includes a newly constructed welcome plaza, landscaped lawns, and a renovated Sunset Pier overlooking the water.

Several structures from the property’s theme park days have also been preserved, including the former SeaWorld ticket and gatehouse pavilions, which have been restored for the new public park.

The reopening marks just the beginning of a much larger redevelopment project.

A second portion of the first phase is expected to introduce a new accessible play area. The city also plans to establish a rental kiosk offering kayaks and stand-up paddleboards, allowing visitors to take advantage of the lake.

The city is also planning to introduce a public beach along Geauga Lake. Womer Benjamin previously said she hoped this portion of the project could be completed within the next two years.

Future plans also include converting the former wave pool into a regular swimming pool, alongside a rock-climbing area, amphitheater, and sports courts. None of these attractions will be ready for the October opening.

Aurora officials have also discussed incorporating memorabilia from SeaWorld Ohio and Geauga Lake into the new park, preserving elements of the property’s history for future visitors.

For those who remember visiting SeaWorld Ohio, the October 25 opening will offer a chance to return to a location that has been inaccessible to the public for much of the past two decades.

Although the killer whales and roller coasters are long gone, the property will once again serve as a recreational destination for Northeast Ohio residents.
