The Walt Disney World Resort looks set to capitalize on the heavy crowds expected for Christmas week as its controversial–and expensive–Lightning Lane Premier Pass just had its first sell-out.

The Lightning Lane Premier Pass came into action not long after Disney rebranded its not three-year-old Disney Genie+ service. Opting to brand the paid-for “FastPass” service under a cohesive Lightning Lane banner, Disney Genie+ was changed to the Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Lane Single Pass.

Similar to the Genie+ offering, which allowed guests to pay a fee per guest per day to enter attractions through the expedited Lightning Lane entrance, the Lightning Lane Multi and Single Pass give guests a chance to bypass the standby line for a variable cost.

One big difference came with the Multi Pass–guests can book attractions from a tiered list up to seven days in advance of their Walt Disney World Resort visit. However, the main two caveats for this perk are that guests staying offsite only get to book three days in advance, and international visitors don’t have the option at all. The pre-booking must be completed while the guest is in the United States.

However, overshadowing all the Multi and Single Pass updates is the Lightning Lane Premier Pass. For a much larger fee, guests can access all the Lightning Lanes in a specific park. With prices ranging from just over $100 to almost $450 depending on the park, the Premier Pass was originally piloted for those staying at Deluxe Disney Resorts only, but a successful trial period saw the offering widened to include all hotels on Disney World property.

While the price point raised eyebrows and caused guests to condemn Disney’s choice to keep enforcing expensive experiences, the Premier Pass has proven popular. During Thanksgiving week, the Premier Pass sold out resort-wide for the first time ever, meaning the offering was completely booked across Magic Kingdom Park, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Now, that sell-out trend looks set to continue as Christmas week approaches. According to WDW Magic, the Lightning Lane Premier Pass at Magic Kingdom Park is sold out for Sunday, December 22, 2024. Priced at $429, Disney has raked in thousands on the pricey service. The continued popularity of such a costly service shows that even the most contested elements of a Disney World vacation will still win out when it comes to having an “easier” experience.

This begs the question: As Disney World becomes more expensive, are guests willing to spend even more to “enjoy” the vacation they’ve already spent thousands on?

As the beginning of this Christmas week sells out, chances are the next days, particularly December 23 through New Year’s Day, will soon be unavailable.

About Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
