Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter creates the feeling of being right in the heart of New Orleans. It’s hard to believe you’re in Lake Buena Vista when you are strolling the cobbled streets of this Disney Resort.
Located on the Sassagoula River, Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter is a Moderate Disney Resort. As Moderate Resorts go, this is the smallest, where Guest rooms are located in 7 blocks just a short walk away from the Resort centre.
Evenings at the French Quarter have a romantic feel; the streets are lit by gas lamps, whilst horse-drawn carriages pass by. Magnolia fragrance fills the air throughout the day as blossoms hang from the wrought-iron balconies lining the cobbled streets. Fountains gently run in the courtyards, as Guests stop to make a wish on a tossed coin into the water.
Inside the Resort center, it’s Mardi Gras every day. Colored coins fill the bottoms of fountains, beaded garlands hang from the ceiling, and Mardi Gras masks decorate the walls. Listen out for the sound of jazz wherever you walk – even the gators outside the lobby love jazz!
The Best Thing at Port Orlean’s French Quarter Resort
There is a lot to admire at this picturesque Disney Resort, and so it provides the perfect setting to enjoy one of our ultimate favorite Walt Disney World snacks – beignets!
Pronounced ‘ben-yay’, these doughnut-like treats are a staple in New Orleans, famously enjoyed in Cafe du Monde. Beignets from Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter, are extra-special as they are Mickey-shaped. And let’s be honest, anything tastes better when it’s Mickey-shaped, right?
Beignets are sweet dough that are fried in boiling water until cooked. Served hot, they are dusted in powdered sugar. Mickey beignets come in orders of 3 or 6 beignets and can be served with your choice of dipping sauce, including salted caramel, strawberry, or chicory chocolate ganache. We highly recommend the salted caramel flavor!
Individual beignets are served up as specialty beignets. They come in flavors such as raspberry, cinnamon sugar, and chocolate. Seasonal beignets are also served up at Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter Resort. Previously, seasonal flavors have included cinna-hot beignets, mint julep, and pumpkin spice.
If you’re gluten-intolerant or vegan, you don’t have to miss out on Mickey beignets. Just let the Cast Member know when ordering.
Scat Cat’s Club Cafe
So you may be wondering where you can treat yourself to the famous Mickey-shaped beignets? Located to the left of the lobby, Scat Cat’s Club Cafe is open from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. every day. Just next door to Scat Cat’s Club Lounge, this is the place to order beignets, as well as coffee and other hot and cold beverages.
It’s a great place to pull up a seat and enjoy your freshly-made beignets, whilst listening to jazz tunes, similar to those played by Scat Cat and his band from The Aristocats (1970).
So when is the best time to enjoy beignets? Well actually, beignets are a treat that you can enjoy at any time of day. Here are the ways in which we fit them into our Disney days!
Breakfast
Mickey beignets are a perfect breakfast item along with your morning coffee. We recommend taking your order to the chairs outside of the Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory and enjoying it in the morning sun underneath the palm trees.
An order of 3 beignets with a dipping sauce is an ideal breakfast order. Grab a fruit pot from the Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory, to make your breakfast a little healthier if you’re feeling guilty!
Afternoon snack
After a morning in the Disney Parks, an afternoon by the pool sounds like a great idea. Before taking a dip in the pool, grab some Mickey-shaped beignets to enjoy poolside.
If it’s a hot day, which is not uncommon in Lake Buena Vista, then you may be in need of some ice cream to help you cool off. The Mickey-Shaped Beignet Sundae will make for a great snack, that could even be shared. Choose your favorite flavor ice cream to accompany 3 Mickey beignets, topped with your choice of sauce and whipped cream.
If you’ve spent the morning at Disney Springs, we definitely recommend catching a boat down the Sassagoula River from the Marketplace to Disney’s Port Orleans Resort. You’ll have earned a helping of Mickey beignets after all that shopping!
Post-Lunch or Dinner Dessert
Beignets make the perfect sweet treat to finish a delicious lunch or dinner from the Sassagoula Floatworks & Food Factory. You have our permission to lick the powdered sugar off of your fingers afterward! It’s all part of the experience of enjoying the delicious Mickey beignets.
If you need time to digest before dessert, why not visit Disney’s Port Orleans Riverside Resort and enjoy lunch or dinner at the Riverside Mill. After enjoying the New Orleans-inspired cuisine, stroll down the Sassagoula River to the French Quarter.
Late-night treat
You’re on a Disney vacation so you can definitely treat yourself to a late-night snack before bed! Scat Cat’s Club Cafe is just a short walk from the Blues & Jazz Bus Station at the French Quarter. Grab an order of beignets on the way back to your Resort room, and enjoy before settling down for the night. Make sure to switch on the TV and listen to the relaxing tunes of the Walt Disney World Today!
Baton Rouge Beignets
If you’re partial to Baileys Irish Cream, Kahlua, or RumChata, then you’ll definitely want to order a portion of Baton Rouge Beignets from Scat Cat’s Club Cafe. Why not enjoy your boozy beignets in the Scat Cat’s Club Lounge, located next door to the Cafe, whilst tapping your toes to live jazz music. Scat Cat’s Club Lounge is open from 5:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. every evening.
No matter what time of day you choose to enjoy beignets, we know that you really are in for a treat. Beignets are great to share with the whole family or to enjoy by yourself. We’re sure that once you’ve tried them, you’ll be returning to Disney’s Port Orleans French Quarter again and again, to devour a helping of the famous Mickey-shaped beignets!
