Bring Holiday Magic Home with a Mickey Gingerbread House

Everyone loves the amazing gingerbread houses that are found throughout Disney. This year, we won’t be able to see these works of art, but Disney Family has a way to bring the magic of the gingerbread house to our homes this holiday season instead.

Here is what you need to get started on the house:

1/2 cup dark brown sugar

1 tbsp cinnamon

1 tbsp ground ginger

1/2 tsp nutmeg

1 1/2 tsp ground cloves

1 tsp baking soda

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 stick butter, slightly melted

1/4 cup dark molasses

2 tbsp water

Some fun ideas for decorations but get creative here:

2 egg whites

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Powdered sugar

Zip-top bag

Scissors

Red and green peppermints

Red and green chocolate candies

Red and green sprinkles

Candy canes

Time to get started on your creations:

Step One: Combine dry ingredients in a small bowl and mix

Step Two: Combine wet ingredients in a large bowl and mix. Then slowly add the dry to the wet, stirring constantly.

Step Three: When it becomes too thick to stir, knead with your hands. Then wrap in tin foil and place in the fridge for 2 hours.

Step Four: After 2 hours, preheat the oven to 375° F.

Step Five: Flour a smooth surface, take out the dough, then roll it out. (Pro Tip: Cut out all your house pieces from paper first to make sure they fit together. Then use those pieces as stencils on the dough to cut out your shapes.)

Step Six: Don’t forget to cut out a Mickey-shaped door! Then place all dough on parchment paper on a cookie tray.

Step Seven: Bake for 15-18 minutes. (Tip: It’s better that the pieces are over baked than under baked so they don’t break as easily!)

Step Eight: Take the pieces out of the oven, then onto a cool, flat surface and let them cool completely.

Step Nine: While the pieces are cooling, add the egg whites and vanilla to a large bowl and mix. Then slowly mix in powdered sugar until the icing is pretty stiff — the stiffer the icing, the better it will hold your house together.

Step Ten: Place icing in a zip-top bag and into the refrigerator.

Step Eleven: Take your gingerbread pieces and place them onto a large piece of parchment paper. Take out all your candies!

Step Twelve: Take the icing out of the fridge and cut a small piece off a corner to use as a piping bag! The first cut you make should be pretty small to use for details before you put the house together.

Step Thirteen: Decorate each piece of gingerbread while it is laying flat before you put them together to form the house.

Step Fourteen: For the front, crisscross the icing to make a pattern on the door, then use a sprinkle for the doorknob, attach it with icing, and decorate all around it (don’t forget to add some hidden Mickeys!). For the roof, create a pattern of Mickeys using peppermints and chocolate candies.

Step Fifteen: For the sides, create a Mickey by cutting off just the curved tops of two candy canes, then use peppermints as ears! Add extra decorations with icing.

Step Sixteen: Cut the hole in the icing bag to be a little bigger, then attach all pieces together starting with the front, back and two sides. *Tip* Use glasses or mugs to keep the pieces in place while the icing hardens. Next, add the two roof pieces (use glasses here as well so they don’t slip off!)

Bring a touch of the park to your house this holiday season with a fun Mickey themed gingerbread house. Add your own creative style as well to make it extra special.

About Jennifer Retzlaff

My name is Jennifer Retzlaff and I became a lifelong Disney fan during my first trip to Walt Disney World in 6th grade. From that moment, Disney became a big part of my life. I live in Iowa with my husband and two kids who are growing up too quickly for my liking. I started introducing my love for Disney early to my family with a Disney honeymoon and then trips when our youngest of 18 months. Since then, our family has been to Walt Disney World over five times and we continue to plan and dream for the next trip. I love the magic that Disney brings to people through the theme parks, cruises, adventures and movies they create. As a teacher, I try to bring that magic into my classroom to help kids believe that “If You Can Dream It, You Can Do It.” I recently reached a dream of mine as I joined Magic Vacation Planner as a personal travel advisor. With this team, I can now help others plan magical vacations. As a passionate writer, I also have my own blog at magicalvacationsbyjen which is also where you can follow me on instagram for trip reviews along with tips and tricks for your next magical vacation.
