The Meteor Finally Hits: DINOSAUR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Closes Forever on February 1

The countdown has reached zero. For over two decades, guests at Disney’s Animal Kingdom have been urged to “go get that dino” before the asteroid hits. But on February 1, 2026, the asteroid finally made impact—not with the Cretaceous period, but with the ride itself. DINOSAUR, the high-intensity, bone-shaking cornerstone of DinoLand U.S.A., has officially and permanently closed its doors.

As the Time Rovers are parked and the Carnotaurus roars for the last time, the park is shifting its gaze from the fossils of the past to the vibrant life of the future. While the extinction of a fan-favorite attraction is bittersweet, it clears the way for a massive $1.7 billion reimagining: the Tropical Americas.

Why DINOSAUR is Extinct

Since opening in 1998 (originally as Countdown to Extinction), DINOSAUR has been one of the most polarizing yet beloved rides at Walt Disney World. Utilizing a sophisticated Enhanced Motion Vehicle (EMV) system, it provided a visceral, dark, and often frightening journey through a prehistoric forest.

However, the ride was showing its age. Frequent technical “downtime” and a theme that many felt didn’t quite live up to the high-concept beauty of Avatar or Africa made it a prime candidate for a total overhaul. The closure marks the first significant step toward erasing DinoLand U.S.A. to make way for a land that better aligns with the park’s mission of biodiversity and cultural connection.

What’s Rising from the Fossils?

The space formerly occupied by the Dino Institute is being transformed into a lush, immersive territory known as the Tropical Americas. This expansion will feature two massive “anchor” attractions:

1. Indiana Jones Adventure

Fans of the DINOSAUR ride system can breathe a sigh of relief. Disney has confirmed that the existing ride track and EMV technology will be preserved and completely reimagined into a brand-new Indiana Jones adventure.

Instead of chasing an Iguanodon, guests will join Dr. Jones as he explores a newly discovered Maya Temple. This won’t be a copy of the Disneyland or Tokyo versions; it’s a unique storyline featuring state-of-the-art animatronics and sets explicitly designed for the Florida heat and Animal Kingdom’s jungle-like atmosphere.

2. The World of Encanto

Adjacent to the temple, guests will find the first-ever permanent attraction based on Disney’s Encanto. Imagineers are building a full-scale Casita Madrigal—the magical house that serves as the film’s heart.

This family-friendly experience will take guests through the house’s various enchanted rooms, using cutting-edge projection mapping and sensory effects to bring the “miracle” to life. It’s expected to be the musical and emotional centerpiece of the land.

What Attractions are Left at Animal Kingdom?

With DINOSAUR gone and construction walls encircling DinoLand U.S.A., many travelers are asking: Is it still worth the ticket price? The answer is a resounding yes. Animal Kingdom still offers some of the most technologically advanced and emotionally resonant attractions in the world.

As of February 2026, here is what remains operational at Disney’s Animal Kingdom:

The “Must-Dos”

  • Avatar Flight of Passage: Still the gold standard for simulators, allowing you to soar over Pandora on a banshee.
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris: The heart of the park, offering a real-world safari through 110 acres of African savanna.
  • Expedition Everest: A high-speed coaster through the Himalayas, featuring forward and backward segments (and a very persistent Yeti).

Immersive Experiences

  • Na’vi River Journey: A bioluminescent boat ride through the flora and fauna of Pandora.
  • Kali River Rapids: A drenching white-water adventure focused on the importance of conservation.
  • Gorilla Falls & Maharajah Jungle Trek: World-class walking trails featuring gorillas, hippos, and tigers.

Live Entertainment

  • Festival of the Lion King: Widely considered the best stage show in any Disney park.
  • Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!: A stunning puppet-based musical.
  • Zootopia: Better Zoogether: Replaced It’s Tough to be a Bug to mixed reviews.

The Verdict

The closure of DINOSAUR on February 1 is the end of a chapter, but the beginning of the park’s most ambitious era yet. While we will miss the “Dino Institute,” the promise of Indiana Jones and the Madrigal family ensures that Animal Kingdom will remain a place where adventure is always alive.
