Disney’s ‘Pauline’ Sparks Ongoing Controversy: Teen’s Tryst with the Devil Criticized

In April 2023, Disney+ gave the green light to a new German show called Pauline. Disney’s Pauline is about a pregnant teen who falls in love with the devil. As in Lucifer… Satan himself. I…couldn’t make this up if I wanted to.

Deadline reports:

“Pauline follows the eponymous protagonist, an 18-year-old who accidentally becomes pregnant – from a one-night stand. With school stress, the climate crisis and the downfall of society weighing heavily on her mind, something she doesn’t need at all right now is catching feelings, especially not for her one-night stand Lukas, who, as it turns out, is the devil himself.”

The show is written by Sebastian Colley and produced by Philipp Käßbohrer and Matthias Murmann, who combined on 2019’s How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) for Netflix. The show’s trio of directors will be Arabella Bartsch, Alma Buddecke, and Facundo Scalerandi. Sira-Anna Faal as Pauline and Ludger Bökelmann as Lukas will star in the series.

“For a long time, the series has been and still remains a project very close to our hearts,” said Käßbohrer and Murmann. “We’re thrilled that Disney+ loves this coming-of-age story as much as we do and that we’ve now been able to begin filming with such an amazing cast and crew.”

“Coming-of-age Story”

A…coming of age story. Because every teen girl gets pregnant and then falls in love with Satan….right?

There’s a lot to unpack there.

It feels a bit like Netflix’s now canceled The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, except with more teen pregnancy and less battling of good vs. evil. In fact, I take that back. Comparing it to the Sabrina reboot feels like an insult to Netflix’s show, which, despite the amount of Satan in it, was a pretty good show.

This just feels like some writer somewhere was pranking a team of studio execs, and Pauline got approved anyway.

Controversy Continues

Fast forward to February 2024, and the future of Pauline is left uncertain. Since the initial announcement of the show, Disney has been mute on the topic. This lack of news on Pauline hasn’t stopped the controversy surrounding the show.

Reddit has exploded with a massive thread of comments from the title, “Grandma thinks Disney is Satanic because of “Pauline.”

Petitions to stop the film continue to climb in numbers. One petition titled “Stop Disney from releasing Pauline” has landed on Change.org:

Children will hear that it’s normal to have a relationship with Satan if Disney releases the movie Pauline which they are filming. It’s about an 18 year old girl who gets pregnant by the Devil. This will twist their minds. For the love of children, just say NO to this malevolent movie. Make your voice count!

The largest petition (now over 17,000 signers) comes from Movie Guide, encouraging people to “Stop Disney from releasing a satanic love story!”

And despite the news first being revealed in 2023, people are still taking to social media with comments such as “Tell me again how these sickos are not coming after our children?”

Disney’s Satan References

This isn’t the first time Disney has felt the heat from references to Satan.

There was a scene in the Tim Allen series The Santa Clauses that premiered on Disney+ that caused an uproar.

Elves are bidding Santa farewell. Each elf holds a letter, with the collective intending to spell the words, “We love you, Santa.” But, for comedic value, the elves get mixed up and briefly spell, “We love you, Satan.”

Santa light-heartedly face-palms and says, “Spelling!” The elves realize their mistake and scramble to get in the correct order, delivering the “We love you, Santa” message they intended. It’s a joke. However, many were upset about the addition.

Will Pauline Still Be Released?

The big question now for many is will Disney’s Pauline still be released on Disney+ despite the controversy.

As we go through 2024, Disney has yet to release further details about the show’s future. Some look at this as good news that Disney is so quiet after the controversy. Others believe Disney is just waiting for the right release time.

Do you think Disney’s Pauline should be released on Disney+? Let us know in the comments.
