Grevy’s Zebra Foals Born at Walt Disney World

We love birth announcements coming from Disney’s Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World.  Disney Parks Blog announced today that two more babies have joined the ranks.  Two female Grevy’s zebra foals were born at the park.  The first foal was born on April 26th to Laylee and the second foal was born on May 1st to Zuri.  The foals are currently backstage bonding with each of their moms.  We don’t know when we can expect to see them in the park, but they will be added to Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail when they are ready to greet guests!  The Grevy’s zebras come from Africa and are one of the most endangered zebra species.  There are only around 2,500 total of them left in the world.

These births are another successful part of the Species Survival Plan.  This is a program through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to help improve the population of threatened and endangered species.  These births will help ensure the future of the species, so that we can continue to have these beautiful animals around for years to come.

Disney Parks Blog also had this to say:  “Our commitment to the care and conservation of Grevy’s zebras goes beyond our park. Through the Imperiled Species Conservation Project (ISCP), which gives our cast the opportunity to personally support the species they love through existing conservation programs, Disney has made contributions toward the care and protection of Grevy’s zebras in the wild. Recently, two of our zebra keepers traveled to Kenya through the ISCP to participate in the Great Grevy’s Rally, a population survey used to document the total number of Grevy’s zebras in the wild.”
