There are so many new exciting additions for the 50th Anniversary of Walt Disney WorldEPCOT had so many new things, and one that is very hard to miss if you are there after dark is Beacons of Magic on Spaceship Earth. It is so incredible and a top photo opportunity that you need to take advantage of. If you want to learn a little bit more about what went into it, Imagineer Zach Riddley shared on his Instagram:

As we continue to share some fun details about the new lighting on Spaceship Earth, there was one last detail that truly stunned me in its total EPCOT-ness that I had to share.

As our team developed and started testing this system, it was evident something magical was happening that wasn’t fully captured in videos and pictures. We were creating an effect that speaks perfectly to the blend of science, biology, technology and art coming together to produce a uniquely human emotional response that’s only fully possible when you experience this Beacon of Magic in person.

So here’s the science behind it:

WDI specifically chose LED emitters that produce a wavelength of blue light near the lowest wavelength perceivable by the human eye. Because this blue light is so low in the visible spectrum – and less often experienced by us in our daily lives – it produces the perception of a vivid color interpreted by our retinas and our brains that is often described as ‘ethereal’ or even ‘celestial’. This is further heightened by the scale of Spaceship Earth, the consistency of light across the large surface and the intensity of seeing this in an intimate setting like the Main Entrance plaza. Literally our minds can’t fully interpret what we’re seeing. The intensity of the color combined with its wavelength means that some cameras experiences do not properly photograph the color or capture this effect.

It’s a function of technology creating an emotional response in us through human biology. And the only way to get this full “ethereal” effect is in person at EPCOT!

I’m curious – how many of you have experienced this “celestial glow” for yourselves??
