Mickey Sighting at Town Square Theater

Although there have been plenty of opportunities to see characters since Walt Disney World reopened, seeing them inside has been a different story. There are a few character meals, but indoor meet and greets have not returned. A modified experience is being tested, and I recently tried one out.

Mickey Mouse can once again be found inside Town Square Theater. Instead of calling it a meet and greet, Disney is calling it a Character Sighting. This is a great way to see characters and have some interaction with them, while still making sure that everyone remains safe indoors.

When I was at the Magic Kingdom, I noticed that the Wait Time for the Mickey Sighting was only five minutes. I couldn’t turn that down! Once inside the building, at first it felt like the old days. There were ropes up for the line, even though they weren’t needed when I was there.

In the room before Mickey, a Cast Member asked how many people were in each party. She coordinated with another Cast Member to keep the number of people seeing Mickey down. This wasn’t new, there was always a limited number allowed in the room that Mickey is in.

The main difference was the actual meeting. Face coverings are still required indoors at Walt Disney World, and the Mickey Sighting was no exception. Those of us in line were reminded more than once that we were not to take them off. Mickey is behind a velvet rope, so hugs and autographs are still not taking place. There was no PhotoPass Photographer, and the Cast Member was not allowed to take pictures for you.

Mickey was as gracious as ever. He would pose for a picture alone, or was happy to join people for a selfie. He was as personable as ever. There were several children waiting, and they all seemed to be happy to get closer to Mickey. None of the children when I was there seemed upset that they couldn’t give him a hug.

My Mickey Character Sighting went smoothly, and it was nice to be able to get a bit closer. I look forward to the return of full meet and greets, and this is a step in the right direction.

About Paula K

I grew up in Western Massachusetts. When I was nine my family went to Disneyland and I was hooked. I grew up, attended New England College in Henniker, NH and eventually moved to Virginia. I worked as a disc jockey, married and became a full time mom when our daughter was born. Fast forward several years. In 2010 we moved to Central Florida and my Disney obsession grew. I now work as a freelance writer and spend my spare time in the parks. Under the name Paula Brown I penned the novels Dream Wanderers and The Coffee Cruiser. I also am a co-author of Dining at Walt Disney World: The Definitive Guide. I'm obsessed with Star Wars, so this is a good time to live in Central Florida. I've been a vegetarian for well over a decade, a choice that my daughter eventually made as well. While my husband still hasn't joined us fully he has given up most meats except for seafood. I was relieved to find that vegetarian dining is not difficult at Walt Disney World.
