Myths and Legends About Walt Disney World’s Haunted Mansion

The Haunted Mansion is definitely one of our favorite attractions at Walt Disney World.  There are a lot of hidden details and extras that guests might miss if they don’t know where to look.  The queue for the attraction, which leads you through the cemetery actually has hidden references for characters that were created for the attraction and didn’t make it into the final version that we know and love today.  For example, be on the lookout for the one-eyed cat.  This cat was originally planned for the attraction and guests would have been warned about the cat from the Ghost Host.

Sea Captain Culpepper Clyne Tomb

There is another character, Sea Captain Culpepper Clyne.  He was created by Disney Legends Rolly Crump and Yale Gracey.  You can actually see his tomb in the cemetery queue as a nod to the story of this ghost.  The version of the attraction that included Sea Captain Culpepper Clyne, guests would encounter this sea captain just before a spooky ghost wold materialize nearby.  He was cut before the attraction was completed, so we never got to see this scene.

You can check out this awesome video from Disney where Imagineers Steve Vagnini and Daniel Joseph share amazing details:

About Christy Caby

I am a diehard Disney fanatic! I fell in love with all things Disney from an early age and that only increased once I first visited Walt Disney World! It led me to complete a yearlong Disney College Program working at merchandise locations within Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Disney-MGM Studios at that time) and I worked for Disney Parks & Resorts Technology in Project/Program Management. Now I get to write about Disney and help others plan their magical vacations! Disney holds a special place in the hearts of my entire family as my husband proposed there, we honeymooned there, took trips while pregnant with each of my boys and have visited with them many, many times from 8 weeks old through now. One of my favorite memories from each trip is always the look on my kids’ faces the first time they see the castle. I’d love to help you plan your magical vacation!
