Fort Wilderness is an extremely popular resort at Walt Disney World.  Many guests like the more laid-back vibe of Fort Wilderness, especially compared to how busy the theme parks are.  Here is a look at 10 pros and cons for staying at Fort Wilderness Resort when at Walt Disney World:

10. PRO: Close proximity to Magic Kingdom Park and Magic Kingdom area resorts.

If you like to be close to the action, the resort is in a pretty good location.  Guests are able to take a boat to get to the Magic Kingdom as well as other resorts like Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge.  Guests can easily attend meals, events and other activities at these locations.  There are also areas where the fireworks can be seen right from the resort, too!

9. CON: There could be a long walk or multiple buses to get to where you are staying.

When you end your day and you are ready to get back to your “room”, that isn’t as easy when staying at Fort Wilderness.  You will have to use the internal bus system to get to your campsite or cabin area and then still may have a walk ahead of you depending on where you are staying.  This isn’t a negative for some guests, but something to be mindful of.

8. PRO: Unique accommodations compared to other stays on property.

Some guests don’t even realize that you can actually tent camp at Walt Disney World.  Tent camping, RV stays and cabins are the options at Fort Wilderness and they are all unique in their own right.  You get the luxury of being inside of Walt Disney World’s huge complex with all of the magic and fun, but stay in a location that feels a bit more rustic and serene.

7. CON: Not a luxurious resort stay with comparable amenities.

This may not be a con for some, but it is important to note that if you like the more luxurious feel when vacationing, then Fort Wilderness may not be for you.  This isn’t a resort has spa and salon amenities, higher end shopping locations, etc.  This is definitely an outdoorsy type of resort for the adventure seekers out there.

6. PRO: Tons of great recreational activities available.

If you enjoy a wide variety of activities, then you definitely won’t be disappointed with Fort Wilderness.  There are things like biking, swimming, archery, visiting the stables, wagon rides, outdoor movies, horseshoes, sand volleyball, shuffleboard, basketball, walking trails and so much more.  There is even a fun, free campfire offered most nights that includes a sing along with Chip & Dale.  There is so much to do that you definitely won’t get bored!

5. PRO: Can be an extremely affordable option, especially for larger parties.

If you are traveling with a larger group, Fort Wilderness may be great for your budget.  The cabins can sleep 6 people, which isn’t usually feasible for many of the resort rooms on property without paying more for a larger suite.  The campsites have a maximum of 10 guests per site, so if you have a large RV or will be tent camping with a larger group this can definitely be cost effective for your party.

4. CON: The property is huge and the amenities are spread out.

We mentioned the internal bus system in order to get to where you are staying, but you will also have to use this or other options in order to get to all of the amenities and other areas within the resort, too.  You could ride a bike to get places, walk or take the bus.  Many guests also look at renting golf carts when they are there so that they have control over going directly to their desired location.

3. PRO: Pets are allowed.

If you are traveling with your pets, then you will definitely like the Campsites at Fort Wilderness.  There is a leash-free dog park at the resort as well so that your pets can get exercise and have fun instead of staying cooped up the entire time. There is an additional fee to bring pets, but if you like traveling with them it is probably worth it for your family.

2. PRO: The campsites and cabins come fully equipped.

No matter which of the accommodations you choose, you get the benefit of being able to cook your own meals with a grill (or the kitchen if you are staying in the cabins), plus picnic tables and full hook-ups for utilities.  If you have a camper, you will have everything you need.  If you end up tent camping, you can still have access to what you need to have a true camping experience.

1. PRO: There are great dining options and a dinner show on property.

Not only can you do some of your own cooking, but you can also enjoy the food on property.  There is a table service all you care to enjoy dining location as well as a general store where you can buy items that you need.  Hoop Dee Doo Revue is an extremely popular dinner show at Fort Wilderness.  It is on the pricier side compared to other meals, but includes dinner, drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and a fun show for the entire family.

About Christy Caby

I am a diehard Disney fanatic! I fell in love with all things Disney from an early age and that only increased once I first visited Walt Disney World! It led me to complete a yearlong Disney College Program working at merchandise locations within Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Disney-MGM Studios at that time) and I worked for Disney Parks & Resorts Technology in Project/Program Management. Now I get to write about Disney and help others plan their magical vacations! Disney holds a special place in the hearts of my entire family as my husband proposed there, we honeymooned there, took trips while pregnant with each of my boys and have visited with them many, many times from 8 weeks old through now. One of my favorite memories from each trip is always the look on my kids’ faces the first time they see the castle. I’d love to help you plan your magical vacation!
