The First Day of Disney Genie

disney-genie

Disney Genie rolled out early in the morning on October 19. The release wasn’t without glitches, but overall we like what the basic service offers. Here are a few early observations.

You will need to update your My Disney Experience App in order to use Disney Genie. It is not a separate app. The update does take a lot of space on your phone. It can also take some time to update, especially if your connection is slow. You’ll want to update the app before you head out, it isn’t something that you should leave until the last minute.

The basic Disney Genie service is free, and it’s easy to use. You’ll need to have a theme park reservation for the day. From there, pick what rides, attractions, experiences, and types of meals are important to you. Disney Genie will come up with a list of suggestions on what you should do and when. If something is recommended that you don’t like, swap it for another suggestion. You can also see why something is recommended to you if you aren’t sure. These are just suggestions, they are not reservations. You will still have to grab a time for Mobile Orders and stand in line for attractions. You can also see estimated Wait Times to better plan your day.

If you plan to Park Hop, that is easy as well. Pick the park you want to hop to and the time (after 2:00) and the My Day area will update to include your next park. You can add the time you want to leave as well, making it easy to have plans in three or four parks.

The Tip Board is also helpful. It will give you current Wait Times, estimated waits for later in the day, and Show Times. It will also give the next available Lightning Lane time if you decide to pay the additional $15.

If you plan to purchase Disney Genie+, you will have to buy it the day of. You can’t purchase in advance. We’ve heard conflicting information on whether or not you can call to have it added, so the app is your best bet. It works like the old FastPass system. You can make one selection at a time, and after you ride or after two hours you can make your next selection.

Individual Lightning Lane times and prices are also listed on the Tip Board. When we looked, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance was listed as “Not Currently Offered” under the Individual Lightning Lane choices. The Standby Line was also unavailable. We don’t know if there was no Individual Lighting Lane listed because the ride was down or because it was sold out.

Disney Genie is going to take a little while to get used to, but we think that the service will help you to better plan your day. If you’re visiting Walt Disney World during the rollout and you have questions, please be kind to the Cast Members. This is all brand new to them as well.
