Walt Disney World May Do Away With Red Wait Time Measurement Cards

How many of you out there have been handed one of the red cards on a lanyard by a cast member and asked to hold onto it and give it to the cast member that puts you onto the attraction?  It is a rite of passage for so many guests out there who frequent Walt Disney World.  These red cards (also known as FLIK cards) are scanned at periodic intervals and handed to a guest in order to more accurately measure the wait time from the attraction.  The cards are scanned again by the cast member right before boarding to measure the entire time that the guest has the card.   This information is used to update the digital wait times that we see outside of the attraction.  If you receive one of the cards, you will find the following written on it: “This card is used to help provide you with the most accurate wait time. Please hand the card to a cast member at the end of the line. Thank you.”

We are now hearing that these red cards may be discontinued.  It isn’t completely a surprise that they would be phases out with the addition of the Magic Bands to Walt Disney World.  There are rumors swirling about this phase out, but there are no confirmed dates or plans for the phase out.  We aren’t sure yet what the new process would look like and if additional Magic Band scanners would be added to the queues or if cast members will use a special scanner to scan them.

We have learned that Mission: Space no longer uses the red cards and have heard that Test Track will be the next attraction to discontinue their use.

We will keep you posted as we learn more of this change.  If you manage to get one on your next trip, you should probably take a picture of it since it probably won’t last much longer.  How many of you have selfies with the red card?  We’d love to see them!

About Christy Caby

I am a diehard Disney fanatic! I fell in love with all things Disney from an early age and that only increased once I first visited Walt Disney World! It led me to complete a yearlong Disney College Program working at merchandise locations within Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Disney-MGM Studios at that time) and I worked for Disney Parks & Resorts Technology in Project/Program Management. Now I get to write about Disney and help others plan their magical vacations! Disney holds a special place in the hearts of my entire family as my husband proposed there, we honeymooned there, took trips while pregnant with each of my boys and have visited with them many, many times from 8 weeks old through now. One of my favorite memories from each trip is always the look on my kids’ faces the first time they see the castle. I’d love to help you plan your magical vacation!
