Disney is always looking for ways to enhance vacations at Walt Disney World. There have been a ton of great features and functionality that added to the My Disney Experience app to give guests as much access as possible to all of the details of their vacation right at their fingertips. The features like mobile order and online check-in have made aspects of a Disney vacation even more convenient and easy to manage. Disney Parks Blog announced today that another great feature will be coming to the app, a digital key.

The digital key will first make an appearance in the app for guests staying at Disney’s Wilderness Lodge. This feature will enable guests to unlock their resort room using the digital key on their mobile device. Guests will also be able to use the digital key to open the hotel entrance gate and other areas around the resort like pools, fitness centers, etc. which would typically require MagicBand entry. Guests that have completed the online check in process would be able to use their digital key and go directly to their room without any coordination with the front desk. This gives guests the option to use this new digital key or their Magic Bands. We expect that this will roll out to other resorts soon after this initial launch.
To use the digital key, guests will be able to opt in and activate the feature on their check-in day via a set up process within the app. To enter their room, guests tap the “Unlock Door” button and then simply hold their phone against the door lock. Check out the video below to see a sneak peek of the feature in action.
Bluetooth®-enabled mobile devices with the latest version of the My Disney Experience app are required in order to take advantage of a digital key for room entry. MagicBands will still be needed for all other uses including park entry, FastPass+ redemption, room charges and more.
What do you all think of this new digital key functionality?
