11 Things We Love About Walt Disney World’s Monorail

The monorail is probably our favorite mode of transportation at Walt Disney World.  It is also one of the most iconic and notorious modes of transportation for all guests.  The first monorail ride to the Magic Kingdom sets the tone for the day and the magic of Walt Disney World.  Here are 11 things we absolutely love about Disney’s monorail:

11. The wait is shorter

The monorail carries a lot of guests and there isn’t a 20 minute wait between pick-ups like there typically is for boat or bus transportation.  It always feels like there is very little wait for a monorail to come and take you to your destination.

10. There are amazing views of Walt Disney World

You get to see areas of Walt Disney World at an elevated view.  You even get to go around some of the beautiful resorts and over the lakes found on property.  It is definitely a more relaxed and scenic view than you might find on the other Walt Disney World transportation.

9. Looking for the different colors

There are 12 different monorail trains and you can tell them apart by their color.  The colors are: Peach, Teal, Red, Coral, Orange, Gold, Yellow, Lime, Green, Blue, Silver and Black.  It is fun to take note of the color that you ride and try to “collect” them all!

8. Doing our own Monorail Crawl

The Monorail Crawl is something that guests have created on their own.  It is where you plan to stop at each resort on the Monorail line for food and/or drinks, hang out for a while and then take the monorail to hit the next resort location.  Each of the resorts have lounge areas so you can get in without reservations.  No matter what your plan it is, it is always a great to time enjoy the stops at all of the monorail resorts.

7. Transports thousands of guests per day

It is unbelievable how many guests take the monorail each day.  On average the monorails around 7,000 per hour, which means that they transport as many as 150,000 or more guests per day (including repeaters).  That is definitely crazy to think about how many people take advantage of the monorail for transportation.

6. Saying at a Monorail resort

The monorail resorts are definitely among my favorite resorts at Walt Disney Word, especially the Polynesian.  It is a huge perk to stay at one of the resorts and have the transportation available for use whenever you want to, especially when it is your favorite way to travel while on property.

5. Closer drop off and boarding points

At the Magic Kingdom and Epcot, the drop off and boarding points for the monorail are closer than you will encounter for the bus transportation.  This means that it saves you a little bit of walking time, which comes in especially handy at the end of the evening when you are already tired of all the walking!

4. The trip around Epcot

The Epcot monorail is the only one that actually takes you inside of the park.  The monorail ventures inside of Epcot and takes you on a trip around the outside of Spaceship Earth.  You get to see many of the areas within the Future World area of the park along the circle back into the monorail station just outside of the park.  It is a really neat route and a great way to get a little bit different view of the park.

3. Character and movie extras on the monorails

During major movie releases or special celebrations at the parks, Disney has been known to add characters images and special decorations to the outside of the monorails.  It makes them even more festive and even more fun when you get happen to get on one of the specially decorated ones.

2. They are eco-friendly

Since the monorails run on electricity, they aren’t omitting all of the bad gases and toxins into the air.  You can ride the monorail without any guilt and know that you are taking a mode of transportation that is safer for the planet than some of the alternatives.

1. They are air conditioned

On a hot summer day, you will definitely appreciate the air conditioned ride to your location.  Getting on the monorail after being in the Florida sun is definitely a relief.  If you just need a place to cool off, you don’t have to disembark when you stop, you can always keep riding around in a loop for a while!

About Christy Caby

I am a diehard Disney fanatic! I fell in love with all things Disney from an early age and that only increased once I first visited Walt Disney World! It led me to complete a yearlong Disney College Program working at merchandise locations within Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Disney-MGM Studios at that time) and I worked for Disney Parks & Resorts Technology in Project/Program Management. Now I get to write about Disney and help others plan their magical vacations! Disney holds a special place in the hearts of my entire family as my husband proposed there, we honeymooned there, took trips while pregnant with each of my boys and have visited with them many, many times from 8 weeks old through now. One of my favorite memories from each trip is always the look on my kids’ faces the first time they see the castle. I’d love to help you plan your magical vacation!
