1. The Graveyard

Guests are fully immersed by the story of the Haunted Mansion long before they enter into its foyer. Once guests pass through the gates, they can fully see the stately manor home with charming brick and trimmed lawns. While the exterior may seem in order, there are plenty creepy details to be found in the interactive graveyard that bring the story to life. As guests work their way through the final portion of the queue, they pass by a series of interactive features, many of which are tombstones. Guests can play a haunting organ, figure out a five way family murder mystery, pay their respects to Master Gracey, help a poet with writer’s block beyond the grave, and see a briny dead sea captain sneeze out bubbles. One of the best details come just before guests enter through the front doors. To the left of the doors is a tombstone featuring a likeness of Madame Leota who occasionally opens her eyes to check out the living world. With so many amazing details, it is no wonder why guests don’t mind waiting on line for the Haunted Mansion!

2. Stretching Room

Once inside the foyer, guests quickly make their way into a tall portrait room where they find themselves suddenly trapped after the wall slides shut behind them. There they are first introduced to the Ghost Host who serves as the narrator for the attraction. Suddenly, the room begins to stretch and the portraits on the walls take an eerie turn as they depict how the subjects perished in the mortal world. This spooky experience helps to set up the tone and mood for the rest of the Haunted Mansion!

3. Beloved Characters

Part of why the Haunted Mansion is so beloved by guests are the characters which help to bring the experience to life. Guests love to quote the Ghost Host who appears on and off throughout the experience. In addition, guests love to pay their respects to Master Gracey’s tombstone seeing as it’s his house they are touring. Perhaps two of the most beloved characters in the Haunted Mansion are Madame Leota, the clairvoyant who can connect with regions beyond, and Constance, the murderous bride who worked her way through five husbands. These characters are rich in detail and help to bring the immersive experience of the Haunted Mansion to life for guests.

4. Classic Music

As guests near the end of the attraction, the ghosts begin to materialize and can be found having a big hoorah in a spooky graveyard scene. The scene features the classic song “Grim Grinning Ghosts” which is being sung by five marble busts mounted nearby. With entertaining and slightly spooky lyrics, this classic song is the perfect accompaniment for the climactic graveyard scene and is sure to be stuck in guests’ heads for a while after disembarking.

5. Hitchhiking Ghosts

The ending of the Haunted Mansion is one of the best in all of Walt Disney World thanks to three characters. As guests leave the graveyard, they are warned by the Ghost Host of three Hitchhiking Ghosts who will follow them home! The three ghosts are Ezra, Phinneas, and Gus and they can be seen magically materializing inside each Doom Buggy with guests. The Hitchhiking Ghosts use special effects to make eerie and silly things happen to guests in the mirror and sometimes can be seen holding up tombstones with guests’ names and hometowns on them! Seeing the Hitchhiking Ghosts sitting in the Doom Buggies with them is sure to leave guests with one final scare as they return to the mortal world in the Magic Kingdom’s Liberty Square.

About Caitlin Kane

Caitlin Kane first started visiting Walt Disney World when she was two years old, and despite spending most of that trip quarantined with the chicken pox she managed to fall in love with the place. Visiting WDW every year since, she especially loves learning all about the history and small details of the parks and eating/drinking her way through the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival each fall. When she's not in Disney, Caitlin lives in New York and spends her time counting down the days to her next trip.
