Anytime is a great time to visit Walt Disney World, but there is definitely something extra special about the winter months.  When we say winter, we mean December through February.  This is a time when it is normally frigid, icy and snowing in other places around the globe.  Here are the top 8 reasons why we love winter at Walt Disney World:

8. The weather is really nice.

It isn’t the usual hot Florida weather that you expect.  The temps get a little bit cooler, especially in the evening time.  This can be more enjoyable for those of you who don’t like to be in the middle of the heat but also want temps that are likely warmer than where you are visiting from.  We love the feel of a Florida winter and how much more comfortable it is to tour the parks in it.

7. Lots of great holiday events.

There are a ton of great holiday events offered for the Christmas holiday.  You have Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, the Candlelight Processional, Holidays Around the World and more.  It is a great time to visit Walt Disney World, especially if you like being in the middle of all of the holiday fun.   There are also a lot of great offerings for New Year’s if you want to ring in the New Year at the happiest place on Earth!

6. There are race weekends.

During the winter months there are two different race weekends, the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend and the Princess Half Marathon Weekend.  There are multiple races that take place during these weekends, even races for the kiddos.  Since it isn’t as hot in Florida, but also not cold, it makes for great racing conditions.  The weekends are very popular, so keep that in mind when planning your travel during the winter.

5. The resorts decorate for Christmas.

If you are visiting during the Christmas season, all of the resorts get into it.  Each of the resorts decorate for the holidays within their own respective theme.  If you are visiting during the Christmas season, you will definitely want to go and tour each of the resorts so that you can check out the fantastic decorations.

4. There are usually fewer crowds.

This may not be the case for right around the holidays and the race weekends, but is usually true the rest of the time.  Fewer crowds mean that there will be fewer lines to deal with so you can experience more around the parks in a shorter amount of time.

3. Easier to get desired dining reservations.

Due to the fewer crowds, you can typically get into some of the most desired dining locations a little easier.  There are dining locations that book up right at 180+ days in advance, so it is definitely nice to have more opportunities to snag one of the preferred dining locations.

2. There are usually good package deals offered.

If you are traveling on a budget and looking for a good deal, there are usually some great ones in the winter months.  Since there are fewer guests, Disney usually offers great package deals in order to get more guests to visit.  You can take advantage of one of these great deals to make your trip even more affordable.

1. More FastPass+ availability for popular attractions.

Since there are fewer guests staying in the resorts, you can usually get the more desired FastPass+ selections, especially if you are staying at a Disney resort.  When staying at a Disney resort, you can start making your FastPass+ selections 60 days in advance, so with less competition you are more likely to get the times and attractions that you want!

About Christy Caby

I am a diehard Disney fanatic! I fell in love with all things Disney from an early age and that only increased once I first visited Walt Disney World! It led me to complete a yearlong Disney College Program working at merchandise locations within Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Disney-MGM Studios at that time) and I worked for Disney Parks & Resorts Technology in Project/Program Management. Now I get to write about Disney and help others plan their magical vacations! Disney holds a special place in the hearts of my entire family as my husband proposed there, we honeymooned there, took trips while pregnant with each of my boys and have visited with them many, many times from 8 weeks old through now. One of my favorite memories from each trip is always the look on my kids’ faces the first time they see the castle. I’d love to help you plan your magical vacation!
