UPDATE: Disney’s Hollywood Studios Still Missing Its Water as Disney Issues New Notice

Disney’s Hollywood Studios has always had a certain nostalgic charm around Echo Lake, from the reflective water views to the quirky, boat shaped Dockside Diner floating along its edge. That familiar scene looks noticeably different right now, since the lake itself has been drained for refurbishment work, leaving an empty lake bed and construction scaffolding in place of the usual water views. It’s part of a broader stretch of construction activity happening throughout the park, and there’s actually more going on nearby than just the lake itself. Here’s a full breakdown of what’s changing, what’s staying open, and what guests should expect if they’re heading to Hollywood Studios anytime soon.

Echo Lake Sits Empty as Refurbishment Work Begins

Echo Lake at Disney’s Hollywood Studios has been drained for refurbishment work centered on the S.S. Down the Hatch, the boat that houses Dockside Diner. The lake bed currently sits completely empty, with scaffolding wrapped around large sections of the boat’s hull and upper deck, creating a very different visual than the calm reflective water guests are used to seeing in that part of the park.

Despite the surrounding construction, Dockside Diner itself remains open for business. A large portion of the structure is covered in scaffolding, but the counter-service window continues serving guests their usual lunch and dinner menus during standard operating hours, and seating around Echo Lake remains available for anyone who wants to grab a bite nearby.

Signage posted around the perimeter of the construction area reads, “Please pardon our appearance. Keeping our city beautiful. Echo Lake is being refurbished for your future enjoyment.” No completion date has been announced for the project, so guests visiting in the near future should expect the drained lake and scaffolding to remain part of the scenery for a while longer.

Wait Til Next Year (@brocmon1) shared a photo of the drained lake on X, “Today at DHS, when Echo Lake becomes Echo Puddle”.

Joseph R. Nosef wrote, “That’s cool. I’ve never seen Echo Lake at Hollywood Studios drained before.”

A Closer Look at the Timeline So Far

According to a report from WDWNT on August 17, guests arriving at Disney’s Hollywood Studios were met with metal scaffolding completely surrounding the S.S. Down the Hatch, covering the water side, the dock side, and both ends of the vessel itself. That scaffolding installation followed closely behind Echo Lake being drained the week prior, a step presumably taken to allow this and potentially other refurbishment projects in the same area to move forward without water complicating the work.

Walt Disney World Resort has not issued an official statement addressing the drained waterway or offering any estimated timeline for when the refurbishment will wrap up. For now, guests are left relying on the posted signage and the visible progress of the construction itself to gauge how things are moving along.

Echo Lake’s current construction isn’t happening in isolation either. Walt Disney World Resort recently completed a repair to the tail of Gertie the Dinosaur, another one of Echo Lake’s most recognizable landmarks. The bright green dinosaur shaped structure houses Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction, a separate Quick-Service dining location that has remained open throughout its own maintenance work and continues operating normally during the broader construction happening around the lake.

Between Gertie’s recent repair and the current work centered on Dockside Diner, it’s clear Disney has been steadily maintaining several of Echo Lake’s most iconic features, even if the timing has resulted in more visible construction around this section of the park than guests might be used to seeing all at once.

Bigger Changes Are Coming to Hollywood Studios Overall

This refurbishment work is happening alongside a much larger construction effort taking shape at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Not far from Echo Lake, Walt Disney World Resort is developing an entirely new land inspired by Monsters, Inc. (2001), positioned near the existing Star Wars, Galaxy’s Edge area. While that project is separate from the Echo Lake refurbishment, it adds to the overall sense that Hollywood Studios is in the middle of a genuinely active stretch of development right now, with construction activity visible in more than one corner of the park simultaneously.

For guests who enjoy tracking Disney’s ongoing expansion projects, this is a good time to pay closer attention to Hollywood Studios specifically, since multiple projects appear to be progressing at once, even if they’re unrelated to each other in scope and purpose.

If you’ve got a trip to Disney’s Hollywood Studios planned in the near future, it’s worth adjusting your expectations around Echo Lake specifically. The area will look noticeably different than usual, with an empty lake bed and visible scaffolding replacing the calm water views guests typically associate with that part of the park. That said, none of this should meaningfully disrupt your actual day at the park. Dockside Diner remains open and serving its full menu, Dinosaur Gertie’s Ice Cream of Extinction continues operating as normal, and seating around Echo Lake is still available if you want to grab a meal in that area.

If you’re the type of guest who enjoys photographing Echo Lake’s reflective water views as part of your visit, it might be worth adjusting your photo plans until the refurbishment wraps up, since the current construction will likely show up in the background of most shots taken from that vantage point. On the other hand, if you’re specifically interested in watching Disney’s ongoing construction and expansion projects unfold in real time, this stretch of Hollywood Studios currently offers a genuinely interesting look at that process, between the Echo Lake work and the nearby Monsters, Inc. land taking shape.

Have you eaten at Dockside Diner during a recent visit to Hollywood Studios, or noticed the drained Echo Lake for yourself? Share your thoughts and photos in the comments, we’d love to hear what you’ve seen out there while this refurbishment continues.
