Another Power Rangers reboot is reportedly in the works, this time for Disney+ and 20th Television. If it happens, it will be the latest attempt to modernize a franchise that’s been around for 30+ years—but one that still hasn’t found lasting success outside its original run.
The 2017 movie certainly tried. It had strong casting, a more grounded tone, and better production values than most people expected. But, sadly, it underperformed at the box office. Then came Netflix’s Once & Always anniversary special, which leaned into nostalgia but didn’t move the brand forward like we expected.
Now, a new series led by the Percy Jackson showrunners is reportedly underway, and it could give the franchise a real shot at staying relevant.

Disney Needs To Start Taking Smarter Risks
If it works, it could also give Disney a reason to bring Power Rangers back into its parks. That idea might sound far-fetched, but in a streaming-first era, where almost every hit show fuels a merchandising machine and theme park blueprint, it makes perfect sense.
Power Rangers already works—it’s superhero-based and, of course, toy-friendly. Not only that, but it had a notable presence at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (then MGM) in the 2000s.
The bigger question is whether Disney should keep leaning on Marvel and Star Wars for everything. Those brands aren’t going anywhere, but they can’t be expected to carry both the parks and the streaming slate forever.
If Disney wants to avoid relying on the same franchises over and over, it’s going to need to take a few calculated risks. And a live-action Power Rangers television series should be one of them, provided it’s a lot more mature than what we’ve already seen, which, without argument, was incredibly cheap and cheesy.
