Luminous The Symphony of Us, the latest fireworks show at EPCOT, has drawn both awe and controversy since its debut in December 2023. The stunning pyrotechnics and emotional music have deeply moved many Walt Disney World Resort guests, but some Disney Parks fans are speaking out about the negative emotional impact the show had on them, particularly concerning themes about loss.
The fireworks show is a tribute to the connections between people around the world, featuring visual storytelling and music that emphasizes humanity’s shared experiences. Luminous The Symphony of Us features a combination of beautiful visuals, a moving score, and themes of unity, love, and loss. For many, the impact of the show is profound–but it’s not a positive experience for everyone.
Reddit user u/jpjoestar recently shared their experience after watching the EPCOT fireworks for the second time, writing, “It’s my second time watching the Symphony of us show, and I cried again. The other shows are cool but the EPCOT one hits me hard in the feelings and idk why. Anyone else feels the same?”
In the comments section, Disney Parks fans quickly jumped in to share their emotional reactions to the fireworks show, many citing personal experiences that made it particularly meaningful. u/SeriousStrokes69 explained how they experienced the show after the death of their wife:
When I first saw this show, I relished the storyline of the connection we had to one another via music and whatnot. My late wife and I both were musicians from our middle school days, and the metaphors used in the narration really struck a chord (no pun intended). The narrator mentions becoming a duet when you meet someone and that just captured our life so well.
But then comes the part about loss.
“Inevitably, in life, the accompaniment drops out. And we experience great loss. We find that the melodies we cherish… are gone. And for a moment, we are playing alone.”
My wife passed away a few years ago unexpectedly. And when that line was read I cried uncontrollably right in front of everyone; I totally wasn’t expecting that. That line captured exactly what I felt when she passed away.
So, to this day, yes, it still hits line a train for me as well. I will cry every time we get to that part about the loss of a partner.
Others shared similarly emotional connections to the show’s themes. u/Proud_Fee_1542 recalled standing near one of the firework cannons during the show and trying to hold back tears.
“I unknowingly was standing just above one of the firework cannons on the bridge near Mexico and at the point when the cannons around the lake go off and the landmarks around world showcase all start to light up I was really struggling to not cry,” they said. “It’s such a lovely show.”
But not everyone is as moved by the show’s emotional depth. Some Disney Park guests were vocal about their discomfort with its somber tone.
“I hate it because of that,” u/Adventurous_Ad1922 said. “Why so sad and heavy? It’s Disney World. I don’t want to be reminded of my dead family members.”
“The first time I saw this show was 2 months after losing my father,” u/phipackattacka replied. “So watching that, thinking about him, while I was surrounded by my own family was something I wasn’t ready for. On top of that it was the last night of our trip. It almost killed me.”
Some Disney Parks fans have also voiced disappointment when comparing Luminous The Symphony of Us to its predecessors at EPCOT.
“You must have never seen IllumiNations before because the current one is horrible compared to that,” u/Fabulous-Lecture5139 said. “I walked away and stopped watching it was so bad.”
“Harmonious will always be #1 in my heart,” u/Substantial-Play5201 replied.
