News of Dolly Parton’s latest missed appearance caused panic for fans recently. The country legend had been scheduled to appear at a high-profile industry ceremony but withdrew at the last minute.
Her absence arrived as Dollywood prepares for its milestone 40th anniversary and continues introducing new expansions, including major coasters and updated entertainment offerings. The resort’s long-term growth has coincided with increasing questions about Parton’s health following a series of postponed events this year.

Dollywood has always reflected Parton’s personal imprint. Since the park opened in 1986, she has shaped its design, festivals, and attractions, including the Dolly Parton Experience and numerous Smoky Mountain-inspired exhibits. Dollywood now ranks among Tennessee’s biggest tourism anchors, known for rides, regional cuisine, and its focus on Appalachian craftsmanship, and even manages to beat Disney in several rankings.
A Year of Worry for Dolly Parton Fans
Concerns intensified earlier this year when Parton delayed scheduled shows and her sister, Freida Parton, publicly requested prayers, citing “health challenges.” The announcement appeared just after Parton postponed Las Vegas performances in September, prompting speculation about the singer’s condition.
Freida later addressed the reaction, saying she “didn’t mean to scare anyone or make it sound so serious when asking for prayers for Dolly,” and clarified that her sister had been “a little under the weather” rather than in crisis.
Parton responded directly soon after, posting a video meant to steady her fan base. “I wanted you to know that I’m not dying. I’m not ready to die yet. I don’t think God is through with me and I ain’t done working. So I love you for caring and keep praying for me,” she told followers.
The reassurance proved timely, as another unexpected cancellation followed.
Parton Withdraws From IAAPA Hall of Fame Ceremony
This week, Parton pulled out of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the IAAPA Expo in Orlando. The 79-year-old said she was advised to rest.
“I sure wish I could be with you in person today, but you probably heard that I’ve been dealing with a few health challenges this fall and my doctors told me to take it easy for just a little while, and I’m truly sorry I can’t be there,” she said in a video.

Parton used the message to thank Jack and Peter Herschend, Dollywood’s longtime partners, crediting them for hearing her out “when I come in with one of my big ideas and dreams,” and celebrating the team’s ability to turn those ideas into fully realized attractions.
She also reflected on the park’s beginnings, recalling her nerves ahead of the 1986 opening when Silver Dollar City officially rebranded as Dollywood. “So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for this honor, from me and from everyone who makes Dollywood what it is,” she said. “Remember that I will always love you.”
A Difficult Stretch for Parton as Dollywood Expands
Parton’s health-related absences have become more frequent. She skipped the Governors Awards days earlier, accepting the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award remotely from Tennessee. Beside her statue-like Oscar, she thanked Lily Tomlin and the Academy, saying, “I’ve been blessed more than I ever dreamed possible… It makes me want to dream up new ways to help lift people up.”
This year has also brought personal loss. Parton’s husband of more than 60 years, Carl Dean, died in March. She later missed a Dollywood press conference due to a kidney stone that caused “a little problem,” she told attendees in a video shared by The Independent.

Dollywood, meanwhile, is in the midst of substantial growth. The park recently announced NightFlight Expedition, a $50 million hybrid coaster-water ride opening in 2026. It will be the largest attraction investment in Dollywood history.
Visitors can still experience the park’s current lineup of thrill rides like Lightning Rod and Wild Eagle, dark-ride staples such as Blazing Fury, seasonal offerings including Smoky Mountain Christmas, and the resort’s signature cinnamon bread. Dollywood’s hotels, water park, and mountain-view setting continue to draw millions annually.
