Hogwarts Castle has temporarily vanished from view at Universal Orlando Resort.
The towering structure, which looms above Hogsmeade village at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, has long served as one of the most recognizable visuals in modern theme parks. For many guests, spotting the castle above the rooftops marks the moment they truly enter the Wizarding World.
That view disappeared earlier this year.

Visitors arriving in Hogsmeade during March found much of Hogwarts Castle hidden behind scaffolding and themed scrim. The sudden construction work obscured one of Universal Orlando Resort’s most photographed landmarks and sparked questions about how long the transformation would last.
The answer is finally becoming clearer.
Hogwarts Castle Expected to Reappear Soon
According to the latest update, the exterior refurbishment of Hogwarts Castle is expected to be completed by May 21 (via Inside Universal).
If that timeline holds, the scaffolding currently surrounding the castle should begin coming down within the next several weeks. The iconic spires and rocky cliffs that define the structure would gradually return to view as the work wraps up.

Universal has not detailed the exact scope of the project.
However, exterior refurbishments of this scale are common across Florida theme parks. Buildings exposed to constant heat, humidity, and heavy storms often require periodic repainting, structural maintenance, and repairs to themed facades.
The difference here is visibility.
Unlike most backstage refurbishments, Hogwarts Castle sits at the very center of Hogsmeade. Guests entering the land can normally see its towers rising behind the village rooftops almost immediately, making the construction impossible to miss.
The refurbishment temporarily disrupted that reveal.
For many fans, the first glimpse of the castle is one of the defining visual moments of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Universal designed the land so the castle slowly emerges as guests walk deeper into Hogsmeade.
Even with the exterior hidden, the attraction inside the castle never closed.
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey continues operating throughout the refurbishment, allowing guests to explore Hogwarts’ interior corridors before boarding the ride. The attraction blends physical sets with robotic ride vehicles and projection technology.
It remains one of the most technologically ambitious dark rides ever built.
How Hogwarts Castle Became Universal’s Icon
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened at Universal’s Islands of Adventure in June 2010.
At the time, Universal recreated Hogsmeade village with an unusual level of detail. Snow-capped rooftops, crooked shop windows, and winding stone pathways mirrored the locations seen in the Harry Potter films.
Hogwarts Castle was designed as the land’s focal point.
The structure houses Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey and towers above the rest of the village skyline. Its jagged rockwork and gothic architecture were carefully positioned to make the castle visible from multiple vantage points across the land.
The expansion reshaped the resort overnight.
Crowds surged to experience the Wizarding World, and Universal’s success forced the broader theme park industry to rethink how intellectual property could anchor entire themed lands.
Universal doubled down four years later.
In 2014, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley opened at Universal Studios Florida. The new land recreated London’s wizarding shopping district and introduced Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts.
The two lands are connected by the Hogwarts Express.
The train allows guests to travel between Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley while experiencing a story-driven ride. The addition effectively turned the Wizarding World into a multi-park attraction within Universal Orlando Resort.
The franchise continues to expand.
In 2025, Universal opened Epic Universe — its newest theme park — which introduced another Wizarding World land inspired by the Ministry of Magic and the Fantastic Beasts films.
Despite those expansions, Hogwarts Castle remains the franchise’s most recognizable visual icon.
