It’s not unusual for theme park attractions to come and go, but when a ride that’s loomed large—literally—over the Universal Studios Florida skyline since 2009 is scheduled to vanish, it sparks more than a few conversations.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, with its sky-scraping lift and signature musical gimmick, has split opinion for years. Some guests praised its thrill factor and customizable soundtracks. Others called it loud, jarring, and long overdue for replacement.

Either way, it’s leaving.

Over the past decade, Universal Orlando Resort has overhauled its parks at a staggering pace. In part to compete with Walt Disney World Resort’s ever-expanding footprint—and in part to capitalize on its own growing catalogue of IP—Universal has added blockbuster experiences like Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and The Bourne Stuntacular.

The company’s expansion, however, has come at the expense of older offerings. Fan-favorites such as Shrek 4-D, Woody Woodpecker’s KidZone, and Dragon Challenge have all vanished in recent years, often with short notice and little fanfare. Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is next.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit Nears Its Final Loop

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit will officially close on August 18 – weeks earlier than its originally scheduled September closure.

When it opened in 2009, the towering steel coaster introduced a unique experience to Universal Studios Florida. Riders climbed a 17-story vertical lift hill before racing through a 65 mph course, accompanied by a personalized music selection piped into their seat.

The ride allowed guests to choose from a catalog of genres—rock, rap, pop, and country among them – with a hidden menu that included tracks like Kermit the Frog’s “Rainbow Connection.” It was a novel blend of thrill and tech, making it an early social media favorite.

Despite its popularity, Rip Ride Rockit faced criticism from guests who found its ride system rough and unforgiving. Over the years, the attraction experienced intermittent closures and frequent maintenance – issues that led to rumors about its longevity. Some speculated that music licensing costs played a role in its downfall, while others pointed to its aging hardware and inconsistent performance.

What’s Replacing the Roller Coaster?

Universal hasn’t officially announced what will take the coaster’s place, but construction is already underway. Guests have reported major changes near the attraction site, with work spilling into Universal CityWalk and the plaza adjacent to Hard Rock Cafe.

The construction setup has drawn comparisons to the ‘secretive’ development of VelociCoaster at Islands of Adventure, which Universal refused to confirm for months despite obvious progress.

Guys, I think it's getting worse… 😐

Speculation around the replacement is rampant. Fast & Furious has been floated as a contender, although Universal already has a ride dedicated to the franchise in the park. Another strong theory is a Ghostbusters attraction, especially since the original firehouse façade—once home to the Ghostbusters Spooktacular show—still stands nearby.

Universal fanned the flames in June when construction walls were installed around the Ghostbusters building. The company has leaned into the franchise recently, adding characters and scenes to both its new Mega Movie Parade and nighttime lagoon show, CineSational.

Until then, fans have just over two weeks to take one last high-speed spin on Rip Ride Rockit – provided they’re okay walking off with a potential headache.
