The high-stakes Memorial Day holiday weekend is fully underway at the Disneyland Resort, bringing massive crowds to Anaheim to kick off the summer travel season. However, just down the road, a severe and volatile public safety crisis has thrown Orange County into a state of emergency.

Following days of an escalating hazardous materials incident at an industrial aerospace facility in neighboring Garden Grove, the Disneyland Resort issued an official operational update to address growing guest anxieties over safety, air quality, and potential park closures.

With nearly 50,000 local residents currently displaced under mandatory evacuation orders, here is exactly how Disney is responding and what it means for anyone visiting the Happiest Place on Earth right now.

The Threat: Inside the GKN Aerospace Hazmat Crisis

The emergency began on Thursday afternoon, May 21, 2026, at the GKN Aerospace manufacturing plant on Western Avenue in Garden Grove. A 34,000-gallon industrial storage tank holding roughly 7,000 gallons of methyl methacrylate (MMA)โ€”a highly flammable and volatile chemical used to produce aircraft plasticsโ€”began overheating and venting toxic vapors into the air.

Crews rushed to pump cooling agents into the structure, but the internal valves failed, triggering an uncontrolled chemical reaction. Because the tank risks either a massive chemical rupture or a devastating explosion, California Governor Gavin Newsom officially declared a State of Emergency for Orange County.

A strict nine-square-mile evacuation zone was drawn, cutting through parts of Garden Grove, Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Stanton, and Westminster.

Disneyland’s Official Operational Update

Because the phrase “chemical explosion risk” has dominated Southern California news cycles all weekend, panicked theme park guests have flooded online spaces asking if the resort is safe. In response, Disneyland Resort leadership published a definitive advisory clarifying the current status of the property:

โ€œAt this time, there is no impact to Disneyland Resort due to this situation and the resort remains open to guests. We are actively monitoring the situation and taking guidance from local authorities. The Disneyland Resort is approximately five miles from the incident and is not in the identified evacuation zone.โ€

As a result, Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure, and the Downtown Disney District remain completely open and operational.

According to Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) officials, major local tourist attractions such as the Disneyland Resort, Angel Stadium, and Knott’s Berry Farm (located 4 miles from the facility) face no active danger. They are well outside the designated blast zones.

The situation remains fluid, but emergency teams reported a potentially positive breakthrough. Following a dangerous, overnight pressure-testing mission, OCFA Fire Chief TJ McGovern announced that crews discovered one known crack in the tank. Officials hope this fracture is relieving internal pressure safely, significantly lowering the risk of a catastrophic explosion.

Furthermore, continuous live atmospheric monitoring by the South Coast Air Quality Management District confirms that air pollution levels around the Anaheim Resort District remain completely normal, with no active chemical leaks drifting toward the theme parks.

Travel and Commuter Impact

While holiday park operations are moving forward as scheduled, getting to the resort requires extra planning. The emergency perimeter has completely blocked off major roadways near the Garden Grove and Anaheim borders. Commuters should expect detours and avoid the immediate vicinity of the 22 Freeway, as local law enforcement continues to maintain strict blockades to secure the evacuation zone.

Disney is advising all arriving guests to monitor the My Disney Experience app and check real-time traffic updates before departing for the parking structures.
