Disney Park Loses Haunted Mansion as Replacement Takes Over

A seasonal Disney tradition has officially begun.

Haunted Mansion Goes Dark for Seasonal Change

As of August 4, Haunted Mansion at Tokyo Disneyland is officially closed to guests.

The attraction is expected to remain unavailable through September 14, with Disney using the downtime to prepare the ride for its annual seasonal overlay.

The closure was announced in advance as part of Tokyo Disney Resort’s refurbishment schedule. Now that work has begun, guests visiting over the next six weeks will find the Fantasyland attraction unavailable.

Tokyo Disneyland opened in 1983, and Haunted Mansion has been part of the park since day one. While it’s far from the most popular attraction in the park, it often attracts long queues.

Its stately exterior closely resembles the version at Magic Kingdom, while the attraction itself uses Disney’s classic Doom Buggy ride system and many of the same iconic scenes familiar to Haunted Mansion fans.

This year’s closure does not signal a permanent refurbishment or a new attraction. Instead, it marks the return of one of the resort’s longest-running seasonal offerings.

Disney Preparing Holiday Nightmare Return

Haunted Mansion is scheduled to reopen on September 15 as Haunted Mansion “Holiday Nightmare.”

Inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas, the seasonal version replaces the classic attraction with a story centered on Jack Skellington’s attempt to celebrate Christmas.

Guests encounter characters including Sally and Oogie Boogie, along with themed decorations, updated lighting, seasonal music, props, and additional Audio-Animatronics throughout the mansion.

Tokyo Disneyland first debuted Haunted Mansion “Holiday Nightmare” in 2004. Since then, it has become an annual fixture of the resort’s Halloween and holiday celebrations.

Disneyland in California also transforms its Haunted Mansion with a Nightmare Before Christmas overlay each year, although the California and Tokyo attractions follow different refurbishment schedules.

For guests visiting Tokyo Disneyland before September 15, Haunted Mansion will remain closed.

When the attraction reopens, the standard version will once again step aside for “Holiday Nightmare,” which traditionally remains in operation throughout the Halloween and Christmas season before the original Haunted Mansion returns.
