Construction walls are not what anyone books a Disney vacation for.
That is obvious, but it is worth saying plainly, because refurbishments at Walt Disney World tend to get framed as good news. New flooring. Updated fixtures. Fresh paint. All of that is true, and all of it eventually benefits guests.
What gets lost is that somebody is staying at that resort right now, paying for a room, walking past plywood to buy a bottle of water.
That is the situation at Disney’s All-Star Movies Resort, where the gift shop refurbishment has moved into a new phase. According to WDW News Today, work at Donald’s Double Feature has now shifted to the back half of the store.
The front half is finished, and it looks noticeably different from what was there before. Which is where the larger conversation starts.

What Has Changed So Far
Per WDW News Today’s reporting, the completed front section of Donald’s Double Feature includes several updates.- New hard flooring in light woodgrain and gray tiles, replacing blue carpet with a white geometric pattern
- Walls painted white, replacing blue and woodgrain decorative paneling
- Shelf dividers are now bright blue, replacing the darker blue
- Wall shelves changed to a brown wood color instead of dark blue
How It Affects Guests Right Now
The disruption is real, even if it is not severe. Construction walls featuring quote signs cut off the back half of the store, meaning guests are shopping in roughly half the space they normally would. Exterior doors are closed, with A-frame signs directing guests to the shop’s main entrance. Disney’s own notice states that Donald’s Double Feature is undergoing a phased refurbishment through late August and will remain open during the work. The Bigger Disruption Is the Guest Rooms
The gift shop is the visible part. It is not the part that will affect the most people. Disney’s notice also states that guest rooms at All-Star Movies will undergo planned refurbishment through January 2027. During that time, guests may see or hear construction work in the area, and alternate paths of travel may be in place. That is a substantially longer window than the gift shop work, and it affects anyone booking this resort over the next several months. Worth knowing before you book rather than after you check in.Why Fans Are Frustrated
Here is where this stops being a routine refurbishment story. Look at the before-and-after of the gift shop. The blue carpet with a geometric pattern became gray tile and light wood grain. Blue and woodgrain paneling became white walls. Dark blue shelving became brown wood. That is not a repair. That is a deliberate shift toward a lighter, more neutral, more contemporary look, and it is the same direction Disney has been taking across the resort portfolio. For a resort whose entire identity is built on whimsical, larger-than-life decor saluting Disney films, from the dotted pups of 101 Dalmatians to the toys of Andy’s Room, a move toward neutral tones reads as a real change in character.
The Conversation This Is Part Of
This complaint has been building for years, and it is not specific to All-Star Movies. Fans have been raising it about hotel projects across the property. One frequent criticism on X put it bluntly. “I just hate this ultra modern Gensler sterilized crap they keep churning out for the hotels,” wrote user mr__blueskyofc. “The rooms across property all feel basically the same wherever you stay with the exception of a few slight decorative enhancements. I don’t know, the days of the themed hotel just feel over. I expect this from Universal and Lowes, not Disney.” User chazfinder made a similar point about a different project. “Why is modern Disney so desperate on creating bland, overly corporate shoe box hotels? It’s mind blowing the downgrade in quality over the last decade.” And user itisbosstime offered a theory about the motivation. “Disney is killing the magic in the hotels and parks with choosing this modern look. I feel they do it to pinch pennies. The idea being that they won’t have to remodel as frequent. Every new store or hotel room is just lifeless now.” Those posts are about the broader trend rather than this specific gift shop, but they explain why a flooring change at a Value resort generates any conversation at all.
