A fresh rumor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe suggests that a character has been replaced in Avengers: Endgame(2019), with the upcoming rerelease recasting the role.

The repackaged film – officially known as Avengers: Endgame Encore – is set to hit theaters on September 25. This will see Marvel insert several minutes of new footage into one of its biggest blockbusters ever as it prepares to release Avengers: Doomsday (2026) in December.

As per the official runtime, the film will include four minutes of additional footage. However, these new scenes may not be the only changes to the film, as reports suggest that Marvel has removed and replaced a key character.

Some Marvel fan sites are reporting that the studio may have reshot scenes featuring Cassie Lang – daughter of Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang, AKA Ant-Man.

The original actress for teenage Cassie Lang, who reunites with her father several years after Thanos wiped out half of the universe, was Emma Fuhrmann. She took over the role from Abby Ryder Fortson, who played Cassie as a child in Ant-Man (2015) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018). However, Fuhrmann was later replaced by Kathryn Newton for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) amid reports that Marvel wanted a higher-profile actor to carry the franchise forward.

Fuhrmann was reportedly blindsided by the change, writing on X in 2020: “Thank you for all your support. It has meant the world to me. I was as sad as you all were to hear the news Thursday. I can only hope that this means there is something else for me in the future of the MCU. I will always be grateful to have been a part of the MCU & the biggest movie of all time. Being an actress is still my #1 passion & I look forward to what the future holds.”

Rumors suggest that Marvel is now going a step further and replacing Fuhrmann with Newton in Endgame for the sake of continuity ahead of Avengers: Doomsday.

Newton is set to reprise the role of Cassie Lang in the film, making the announcement with a video featuring a miniature director’s chair bearing her character’s name and the movie’s logo in April.

This wouldn’t be the first time a studio has retrospectively replaced a recast actor. The Star Wars franchise did something similar for the 2004 release of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980). Ian McDiarmid was inserted into the film as Emperor Palpatine, replacing the character’s original performance after McDiarmid became synonymous with the role in later installments.

That same release also altered Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983), replacing Sebastian Shaw with prequel star Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker’s Force ghost in the film’s closing scenes.

Marvel has yet to officially confirm the change for Avengers: Endgame.
