Moving Past Johnny Depp: Disney Officially Crowns Its New Captain Jack Sparrow
For more than twenty years, Captain Jack Sparrow was inextricably bound to one man: Johnny Depp. Beginning with 2003’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Depp transformed a swaggering, rum-loving pirate into a global pop-culture phenomenon, earning an Oscar nomination and leading five blockbuster films that grossed billions.

Now, Disney has officially taken its biggest step yet into the post-Depp era.
In a landmark casting announcement, Olivier Award-winning British actor George Maguire has been tapped to play Captain Jack Sparrow in the upcoming live production Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Immersive Adventure. Developed by immersive entertainment leader Secret Cinema alongside TodayTix Group and Disney Theatrical Group, the high-profile London stage production marks the first time Disney has officially licensed another actor to headline a major theatrical narrative as the beloved pirate captain.
Who Is George Maguire?
Stepping into Johnny Depp’s well-worn pirate boots is a monumental task, but Maguire brings an exceptional stage resume to the role. The acclaimed British performer won the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for his breakout portrayal of Dave Davies in the West End hit Sunny Afternoon. Musical theater fans will also recognize Maguire from his celebrated, high-energy turn as Buck Barrow in Bonnie & Clyde.

With a proven background in rock musicianship, physical comedy, and kinetic stagecraft, Maguire provides the charismatic presence required to embody Jack’s balance of roguish wit, chaotic improvisation, and swashbuckling bravado—bringing the character to life just inches away from the audience.
Assembling the Crew
Maguire won’t be navigating the Caribbean alone. Disney and Secret Cinema have assembled an impressive British ensemble to face off against the new Captain Jack:

- Phil Daniels stars as Jack’s ruthless rival, Captain Hector Barbossa. The veteran British icon is famous for his starring role in the 1979 cult classic film Quadrophenia, his long run on the BBC’s EastEnders, and his spoken-word performance on Blur’s hit song “Parklife.”
- Lily Blunsom steps into the role of Elizabeth Swann.
- Harrison Wilde takes on the sword-wielding blacksmith Will Turner.
- Gleanne Purcell-Brown portrays the fierce pirate Anamaria.
The production is directed by Olivier Award winner Matt Costain, whose extensive background in circus arts and physical storytelling will drive the show’s intense live stunt choreography and swordplay.
Step Inside the Black Pearl
Unlike a traditional seated musical, The Immersive Adventure drops audiences directly into the storyline of The Curse of the Black Pearl. Staged across massive physical sets inside a purpose-built flagship venue along London’s Greenwich Peninsula, the two-hour experience blends curated film sequences with live, interactive theatre. Guests will navigate bustling Port Royal docks, dodge brawls in Tortuga taverns, and explore the decks of the Black Pearl itself.

Audience curiosity surrounding the post-Depp production has already caused a surge at the box office. Previews launch on February 16, 2027, ahead of an official gala opening on March 10, 2027. High global ticket demand prompted producers to immediately add a six-week extension, keeping the show docked through June 6, 2027.
While Johnny Depp’s cinematic legacy as Captain Jack remains historic, George Maguire’s casting signals that Disney views the rogue pirate as an enduring archetype—one ready to set sail with new generations of talent.
